The Berliner Platz U-Bahn ( underground) station is an underground station of the Essen Stadtbahn in the north-western area of the Essen city center . It is one of three crossing stations between the Essen Stadtbahn and the Essen tram .
history
The underground station at Berliner Platz was opened on November 27, 1981 on the north-south route (Stadtbahn) as part of the extension of the existing U18 line and the opening of the U17 on the route from Hirschlandplatz to the university. Almost ten years later, the east-west tunnel of the tram was opened from Viehofer Platz. As part of a test project, this route was also used by track-guided trolleybuses, which were given additional doors on the left-hand side because of the central platforms. However, these tunnel journeys were prone to failure, so that the lane trolleybus operation was interrupted several times and thus also the tram operation was impaired. As a result, the then Essener Verkehrs-AG (EVAG) ceased tunneling operations on CityExpress lines 45 and 47 on September 21, 1995; the official shutdown took place on September 24, 1995.
Between January and July 2016, the lowest, third level of the trams was refurbished, which remained completely closed for six months and the trams slowly drove through without stopping. In addition to the installation of an additional elevator, visual and safety modernizations, such as fire protection, took place. The estimated costs for this were 6.3 million euros, of which 2.2 million euros came from public funding.
Location and structure
The lowest tram station in Essen is located under the roundabout, where Ostfeld, Altendorfer, Segeroth and Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse meet. It is one of the three terminal stations on the main line and the start and end point of a light rail line.
The underground station is structurally designed as a tower station:
- Level 1 serves as the distribution level for travelers. The southern exit leads directly to the Limbecker Platz shopping center . To the east is the exit Friedrich-Ebert-Straße (south), Ostfeldstraße , in the northeast the exit Friedrich-Ebert-Straße (north) , in the north the exit Segerothstraße, Universität , in the northwest the exit Altendorfer Straße and in the southwest the exit Cinemaxx, Colosseum theater .
- On level 2 there is a central platform in north-south direction with a platform height of 80 cm for the standard-gauge , high-floor light rail . The type B trams stop here .
- On level 3, the lowest level of the tower station, there is a central platform for the meter-gauge , low-floor tram , almost in an east-west direction .
Between the Berliner Platz underground station and the neighboring Universität Essen underground station there is a sweeping system for turning light rail trains.
