The USS Augusta (SSN-710) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Los Angeles-class submarine to.
history
The Augusta, named after the city of Augusta in Maine , was laid down at Electric Boat on April 1, 1982 , launched on January 21, 1984 and commissioned with the United States Navy on January 19, 1985.
The boat caused a sensation when it was involved in the incidents of the sinking of the Soviet submarine K-219 in October 1986 . The Augusta had taken up the pursuit of the K-219 under Captain James von Suskil, and on October 3 the K-219 exploded in a missile silo. After the K-219 was able to prevent the sinking for the time being, a Soviet freighter, the Fyodor Bredkin , reached the site of the accident east of Bermuda to tow the damaged vessel , but this failed. After the K-219 sank on October 6, the USS Augusta left the area and went on patrol, pursuing the K-279 , a Project 667B boat . The Augusta probably collided with the K-279. Subsequent images of the K-279 with the bow pressed in speak for this thesis.
The Augusta returned to her base in Groton , Connecticut , where her sonar systems were repaired. The repairs were estimated to cost approximately $ 3 million.
In September 2007 the Augusta completed its last mission. In February 2008 the boat was officially withdrawn from the fleet, the inactivation will take place in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard . On February 11, 2009 she was decommissioned and is to be canceled in the Ship-Submarine Recycling Program .
