The tournament was dominated by the players from Australia. In the men's case there was an all-Australian final. The Australian Margaret Court secured the title in the women's singles and on the side of the American Marty Riessen in the mixed doubles. The title in men's doubles also went to the fifth continent.
Rod Laver was the clear favorite for the title at the 1969 US Open, after he was ready to win the Australian Open, the French Open and the Wimbledon tournament. Until the round of 16 against Dennis Ralston , he did not give up a set and had to go over five sets in this match. In the quarter-finals he defeated Roy Emerson in four sets with 4: 6, 8: 6, 13:11 and 6: 4. In the semifinals he met last year's winner Arthur Ashe , against whom he prevailed with 8: 6, 6: 3 and 14:12.
Lavers final opponent was the third seeded Tony Roche , who u. a. had to prevail against Bob Lutz and Earl Buchholz . In the semi-finals he met his compatriot John Newcombe, who was second seeded, against whom he won in five sets. In the Australian final Laver won in four sets with 7: 9, 6: 1, 6: 2 and 6: 2.
With his triumph at the US Open, Laver managed a Grand Slam for the second time after 1962 .
