History

The village lies on the ground of an ancient settlement that was inhabited around 3000 years ago. This is evidenced by excavations carried out by Carl Findeisen in the 1920s. He found several urns in the fields of the farmers of that time , in which individual objects such as arrowheads, rings and the like were found. In pagan times, such utensils were given to the dead in the urns after the corpses had been burned with pine wood. Around these urns were so-called "tear pots". Since hardly any jewelry was found, it can be assumed that it was a poor settlement.

Ubegowe was first mentioned in a document in 1240 . The name comes from Slavic and means "refugee's village". The Margrave Heinrich issued a deed of fief to the Hain Monastery (today Grossenhain) .

The remains of a moated castle are in the southern part of the village . It is said to come from the Slavic period. Otherwise little is known about it. It is largely leveled, but is available as a ground monument under monument protection .

The ruin of an old Dutch windmill is also a listed building. The age of this mill cannot be precisely determined. It is believed to be as old as the village itself.

During the Thirty Years' War the plague raged in Uebigau as well. A total of ten plague deaths were recorded. In the years 1637 to 1650 the Uebigauer had to experience a lot of suffering. They were repeatedly plundered when troops passed through .

At the time of Johann Georg I (Saxony) , the "Zabeltitz diamonds" were also found in the course of the Elligast near Uebigau. When they were cut, they looked like diamonds. This "Saxon diamonds" were used among other things for the bridle of August the Strong to occupy it.

The population figures were relatively stable.
