The University for Continuing Education Krems (until March 30, 2004: University Center for Continuing Education with the name Danube University Krems ) is a university in Krems an der Donau operated jointly by the Republic of Austria and the Province of Lower Austria , which offers part-time continuing education courses. The university is divided into three faculties , with the Faculty of Health and Medicine being the largest with around 47 percent of students.

history

In April 1994 the Danube University Krems was founded as a "University Center for Further Education"; teaching began in October 1995 with 93 students and three courses. On April 1, 2004, the new federal law on the University for Continuing Education Krems came into force, which is largely based on the 2002 University Law. With this law, the official name of Danube University Krems was changed to “University for Continuing Education Krems”. For the first time, the university was given the right to appoint its own university professors. The specialization in postgraduate university courses remained.

Since the university was founded, around 25,000 students have completed further training, and more than 8,200 students from around 85 countries are currently studying in one of more than 200 university courses.

The University for Continuing Education Krems has a legal mandate from the State of Austria to serve scientific teaching and research related to continuing education. The range of courses is limited by law to university courses for further education and includes the following subject areas:

  • Building & Environment

  • Health & Medicine
  • Art and culture

  • Migration & International
  • Psychotherapy & social
  • Law & Administration
  • Economy & corporate governance

Masters programs as well as various university courses and seminars (with and without a degree ) are offered in these areas . A master’s degree in a university course does not, however, lead to an A-post (in Austria) or to a placement in the higher service (in Germany).

Location and campus

Campus Krems

The Danube University Krems is located in the Stein an der Donau district of the Wachau . Part of the university is housed in the revitalized former tobacco factory Krems-Stein, a characteristic industrial building from the beginning of the 20th century. The three-storey reinforced concrete skeleton building in the design language of a “third baroque” was built between 1919 and 1922 according to plans by the architect Paul Hoppe and redesigned in the early 1990s by the Austrian architect Manfred Wehdorn with the greatest possible preservation of the historical structure .

In 2005 Danube University Krems received additional teaching and research rooms, a new library, a new cafeteria and an auditorium as part of the completion of the Krems campus . Furthermore, a cinema with a restaurant and an apartment house were set up on the 34,000 square meter campus site. The Krems campus, which was planned by the Austrian architect Dietmar Feichtinger , who works in Paris , is shared by the Danube University Krems with the IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems , the Karl Landsteiner Private University for Health Sciences , the Austrian Film Gallery and the Lower Austrian Education Society.

Since 2002 the university has had a branch in the Göttweig Abbey, connected with the task of developing the Abbey’s graphic collection.

An extension west of the campus (the so-called "campus west" with a hotel, catering, offices, other service facilities and a parking garage) was completed in August 2008.

Since the winter semester 2012/13, the university has also had a location in Memmingen in Germany.

financing

The Republic of Austria and the Province of Lower Austria jointly maintain the University for Continuing Education Krems. It is partly financed by tuition fees, which must cover the variable course costs (Section 10 DUK Law).

Legal provisions

The educational institution is a public university according to the Universities Act (UG) 2002 and the Federal Act on the University for Continuing Education Krems (DUK Act 2004, now UWK Act 2004). As a university for continuing education, Danube University Krems specializes in scientific teaching and research in the field of continuing education. The federal law on the right to award doctorates at Danube University Krems came into force when it was published in the Federal Law Gazette on March 12, 2014.

Rectorate

Friedrich Faulhammer has been the rector since August 1, 2013 .

In February 2007, the then rector Helmut Kramer resigned due to differences of opinion about the strategic leadership. In May 2007 Heinrich Kern was appointed the new rector. The interim director, Vice Rector Ada Pellert, did not appear in the three-party proposal, which led to protests in the Senate and accusations of violating the equal treatment guidelines.

In August 2007 the University Council announced that the discussions about the appointment of rectors were due to a structural problem. It was decided that the field of medicine and life science should be outsourced from the University for Continuing Education Krems to a newly established private university for medicine. Kern was asked to apply for the leadership of the future private university, Pellert was asked to apply for the rectorate of the University of Krems for further education. On December 17, 2007, the University Council appointed two new Vice-Rectors: Hanna Risku became Vice-Rector for Teaching, Jürgen Willer took over the research agenda. Ada Pellert remained Vice Rector and was in charge of structural issues. In April 2008, the Vice Rectors Ada Pellert and Hanna Risku announced that they would resign from their positions in July 2008. Agreements that have not been observed are given as a reason. Rector Heinrich Kern resigned at the end of August 2008. The previous Vice-Rector Jürgen Willer was elected as his successor in December 2008 and took up his post in January 2009. On December 19, 2011, the University Council unanimously re-elected the incumbent Rector Jürgen Willer for a second term, which should begin in 2013. Due to "irreconcilable differences" with the university council, Willer announced his resignation in September 2012. In its meeting on February 20, 2013, the University Council elected Friedrich Faulhammer, Secretary General in the Federal Ministry of Science and Research, as the new Rector. On August 1, 2013, the new rectorate took up office with rector Friedrich Faulhammer and Viktoria Weber as vice rector for research and Monika Kil as vice rector for teaching / continuing education. On August 1, 2018, the new term of office of the Rectorate began with Rector Friedrich Faulhammer, Viktoria Weber as Vice Rector for Research and Thomas Ratka as the new Vice Rector for Teaching / Scientific Further Education.
