history

In contrast to some other German universities founded in the 15th century , the University of Rostock , founded in 1419, had a medical faculty with a corresponding clinical facility from the start. Carl Friedrich Strempel and Viktor Schilling founded today's university hospital. Johannes Reinmöller was the pioneer of oral and maxillofacial surgery in Rostock. Otto Körner held the first chair for ear, nose and throat medicine in Germany.

From January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2011, the Rostock University Hospital was economically and legally independent in a legally competent institution under public law. As a result of the changes in the State University Act of September 30, 2010, the sub-body of Rostock University Medicine was founded on January 1, 2012 under the umbrella of the University of Rostock. The university hospital and the medical faculty belong to it.

Today more than 80 professors work in the Rostock University Medical Center. Over 1900 students are trained in medicine and dentistry every year. Rostock University Medical Center is divided into 36 clinics and polyclinics / departments as well as 19 institutes (as of 2012). With over 1,100 beds, the clinic is one of the largest medical facilities in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .
