The University of Bergen ( Norwegian : Universitetet i Bergen , Latin : Universitas Bergensis ) in Bergen is the third largest university in Norway with 18,500 students and 4,000 employees (2020) after the universities in Oslo and Trondheim . The Bergen Museum is part of the university campus . The city of Bergen is surrounded by 7 mountains, which are also reflected in the university's coat of arms.

history

It was founded on August 30, 1946 through the law establishing the University of Bergen. This was decided on April 9, 1946 and came into force accordingly on the day it was founded. The University of Bergen is the second university in Norway after the University of Oslo . However, the university's roots go deeper. Prior to that there had been scientific activity and teaching at the Bergen University Museum, which was founded in 1825.

Ranking

In 2010 the university was ranked 135th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and in 2018 ranked 164th in the QS World University Rankings .

Faculties

There are seven faculties with 90 institutes and departments:

  • Faculty of Art, Music and Design (formerly the Bergen School of Art and Design and the Grieg Academy for Music)
  • humanistic faculty (historical-philosophical faculty)
  • Law Faculty
  • Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
  • medical and dental faculty
  • psychological faculty
  • social science faculty

Library

The university library manages the Sophus Tromholt collection , which includes 231 photos on glass photo plates and 189 photos on albumen paper from the years 1882–1883. Most of the pictures were taken during Sophus Tromholt's stay in Kautokeino in Northern Norway, where he was involved in observing the northern lights during the First International Polar Year . The collection was declared World Document Heritage in 2013 .
