history
Early history
Eggingen was first mentioned in a document from Heinrich IV in 1071. The community area was settled 4800 years ago (stool graves). In Roman times there was an early Roman military camp and a Roman estate . There was a castle on the Burghalde. The ruin is still visible from the air. This was about 75 meters long and 25 meters wide. From the keep it was quite possible to monitor the Wutach valley. The view of the Küssaburg was clear. Many houses were built with the stones from the castle ruins, not only along the winter path, but also in Waldshuter Straße. The old chapel stood on a ledge and was built and consecrated in 1454. This was aligned with the tower to the east. It stood for almost 500 years and fell victim to an earthquake. The chapel was demolished in 1913 and the current chapel was built about ten years later. The cross of the old chapel has been restored in the present chapel.
