Unterstraße is a district of Wermelskirchen in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

The town of Unterstraße in Wermelskirchen was called only street until 1892 . The Reichspostverwaltung had chosen the name to distinguish it from Oberstrasse, which at that time still belonged to Wermelskirchen. It is located west of the Tente , south of Ellinghausen and north of Löh. The “sub-street” is as old as the street on which it is located. This old trade route leads from Cologne to Dortmund . It is thus a side branch of the European long-distance route from Bruges to Novgorod . Today this function has been taken over by the parallel Federal Motorway 1 . The federal highway 51 runs through the village . The new development area “Im Märchenviertel”, which is currently in progress, has been designated in Unterstrasse.

Even Charlemagne is one of its axes campaigns have only taken over this routing. The sources say that he rode from the assembly point of the army in Düren via Cologne to Hohensyburg near Hagen in three days , that can only have been the route of today's B 51 in 775. This very old trade route was opened under Elector Karl Theodor von Wittelsbach expanded as a highway in the 1760s and 1770s .

A customs office is mentioned for Wermelskirchen as early as 1398. The Unterstrasser Landwehr, Schanze and Zollstelle was a vertical bar and remains north of the B 51 are still preserved. These are registered as ground monuments. The hill is mentioned on the map of Erich Philipp Ploennies in 1715. Councilor Wülfing from Beyenburg wrote in 1729 “When the French invaded the Bergisches Land from Bonn, he and 300 men of the best official shooters took the hill beyond Wermelskirchen (from Beyenburg's point of view) Occupied on the Cöllnische Landstrasse, commanded and patrolled it himself, even some of the villages on the Rhine turned away from grazing parties ”. Until the 1860s, the customs office was used as a road toll to maintain the road.

The first mention of Unterstrasse in the Ploennies map in 1715 is "ad Stras".

Fire brigade on the Unterstrasse

The fire fighting group Unterstraße is part of the Wermelskirchen volunteer fire brigade and belongs to the 2nd fire engine . It was officially founded in 1889. Recent research shows that a new fire engine was purchased as early as 1837 as a successor to an older fire engine. Around 1809, the school districts and probably also fire protection were organized under the Napoleonic government. As early as 1928 the Unterstrasse fire brigade organized a so-called Carnival masked ball. In 1982 the fire fighting group Unterstrasse and the MGV Niederwermelskirchen founded the carnival meeting "Tenter Meddemang" and still inspires people today. Meddemang is an old dialect and means "in the middle".

The RVK buses with the 260 line ensure local public transport .
