action
In 1902 the Russian officer and geographer Vladimir Arsenyev led an expedition to survey and map the Ussuri region . The expedition meets the ranger Dersu Usala , who joins the expedition. A friendship gradually develops between Arseniev and Usala, despite their differences. Although Usala lost his family to a smallpox epidemic and has since lived on his own in the wilderness, his life is deeply determined by the knowledge of the deep connection between all living things. He impressed the participants of the expedition with his shooting skills and his ability to read tracks. While Usala and Arsenyev are exploring a lake, a storm breaks in. Usala builds a shelter out of grass and saves his friend's life. Eventually they part ways.
In 1907 Arsenjew led another expedition to the Ussuri region and met his friend again. You come across traces of robbers. Usala shoots a tiger. After that, he believes he is cursed for this act. He believes that his age-related myopia, which greatly impedes his hunting, is the result of the curse. Arsenyev takes Usala home with him. The ranger does not feel at home in the city. He lacks nature and he cannot come to terms with many of the rules of civilization. So he decides to return to the wilderness, knowing that his days are numbered there. Arsenyev gives him a new rifle as a goodbye. Soon after, Arsenyev learns that Usala was killed by strangers - because of the rifle. He drives to the crime scene and buries the friend. When he returned there in 1910 and looked for the grave, his search was unsuccessful. A settlement has now been built there.

Reviews
“A pessimistic parable about the clash of two cultures whose representatives remain strangers to each other despite mutual sympathy. The real heroine, however, is nature, visually captured in beguiling beauty: her rhythm determines the film from calm to furious snowstorms. "
