The VfR 1910 Bürstadt is a soccer club from Bürstadt .
history
The club was founded on February 1, 1910 as SC 1910 Bürstadt and renamed to VfR Bürstadt on August 23, 1919 . In its first years, the club played mostly under-class. Only in the 1932/33 season did the Bürstädter appear in the (then first-class) district league Main / Hessen, but missed qualifying for the Gauliga Südwest, introduced in 1933, by three points. In 1942 VfR had its only chance to move up to the Gauliga, but failed with only one win from six games in the promotion round.
After the Second World War , all Bürstadt sports clubs in the city were dissolved and a large local club, SG Bürstadt, was founded. But they soon returned to the name of the old association.
In 1967 the VfR was relegated to the group league south. Then the Lothar Buchmann era began . The coach (and initially also the player) immediately led VfR back to the Hessenliga. From there it went up. The 1971/72 Hessen league season was dominated by VfR Bürstadt. With nine victories in a row, the Bürstadt-based company underpinned their claim to leadership, celebrated championship and promotion to the second-class Regionalliga Süd.
For two years the Bürstädter stayed in the lower table regions, so they could not qualify for the newly founded 2nd Bundesliga in 1974 . After the 1974/75 season, however, VfR was in the final of the German amateur championship and defeated SC Victoria Hamburg 3-0. The team from the Ried succeeded in doing this thanks to three hits from the legendary "Witcher" Karl-Heinz Vogt . The following team won the title under coach Lothar Buchmann : Manfred Neuwinger - Rudolf Geier - Bernd Walz, Ludwig Reinhardt, Klaus Gleim - Reinhard Grimm, Jürgen Groh , Kurt Köhle - Ramon Berndroth (84th Guido Stetter ), Karl-Heinz Vogt , Erich Schmiedl . In 1976 and 1986 the club reached the final of this competition again, but lost to SV Holzwickede and BVL Remscheid .
It was celebrated again in 1977, when the Hessen championship was retracted and Bürstadt rose to the second league south for the 1977/78 season. But after only a year it went back to the Hessenliga. In a total of four years in the second division, VfR was relegated three times - in 1978 and 1985 as third from bottom of the table, and in 1981 as thirteenth in the table only due to a league reform. Only in the 1979/80 season did the Hessians manage to stay in the 2nd Bundesliga.
From 1985 to 2002, the VfR played with a few interruptions in the amateur league or Oberliga Hessen. In financial terms, he had to pay tribute to the past. Because the tax debt was pressing, the so-called reversal occurred in 2002: the city of Bürstadt bought the club's premises. Six years later, the social security agencies filed claims against the association. As a result, the VfR had to file for bankruptcy. In the 2008/09 season, the VfR Bürstadt played in the district league, as second in the table he made it to the eight-class district league, in which the club took 6th place in the 2009/10 season. In 2010/11 the VfR, as champions of the regional league, was promoted to the seventh-class group league in Darmstadt. There he won the championship in the 2012/13 season, which meant promotion to the association league. Having started as a promoted team, VfR Bürstadt was already the champions of the Football Association South two match days before the end of the 2013/14 season, thus creating the athletic prerequisites for promotion to the Hessenliga. However, not least because of financial considerations, this was waived and the team instead even voluntarily withdrawn into the two classes lower regional league Bergstraße. In the 2014/15 season, VfR Bürstadt took 15th place in the table and secured relegation against FC Alemannia Groß-Rohrheim. The 2015/16 season ended the club in 10th place in the table.
VfR Bürstadt was one of the few German football clubs that sold its naming rights to an external sponsor (the tableware manufacturer Otto Limburg from Bürstadt-Bobstadt) in order to continue to play at a high level. In their most successful time, the black and white players played under the name VfR 1910 OLI Bürstadt from July 1, 1973 until the sponsor's bankruptcy (1982) . The VfR OLI Bürstadt still holds the record of the highest away win in the 2nd Bundesliga. On April 22, 1978 VfR won 9-0 at FK Pirmasens.
Stadion
The club's venue has been the 12,000-seat Robert Kölsch Stadium since 1923 . The renaming of the former Waldstadion after long-time patron Robert Kölsch (1915-2010) took place in 1990.
In July 2019, the grandstand owned by the city of Bürstadt will be demolished in favor of two artificial turf pitches and a new building to be built as part of the new sports and education campus.
