Viana is a city and a município (administrative district) in the metropolitan area of the Angolan capital Luanda . Viana is about 90 minutes by car from downtown Luanda.

Viana is the seat of the Catholic diocese of Viana .

History and urban development

On May 11, 1960, the administrative district (Circunscrição) Viana was created with an area of 820 km². It included the administrative center of Barra do Cuanza as well as Belas, Boa Vista and Cacuaco. With the administrative reform of May 27, 1965, Viana was declared an urban district (Município) on December 13, 1965, but lost Cacuaco. Since another administrative reform on January 18, 2012, Viana consists of a municipality and six municipal districts. In 2009 over 3,000 families were forcibly relocated from the Ilha de Luanda to the Zango district. They were housed in tents with the government promising to provide them with houses within four months. Since the government has not kept its promise even after ten years, an ever-growing musseque has been created from tin huts.

Because of its proximity to the city of Luanda, Viana has experienced a very strong increase in population and industry in recent years. In the Zango district in particular, many new residential buildings have been built, such as the “Zango 8000” residential complex, which opened in 2018, with 8,000 apartments and single-family homes, and the “Vida Pacífica” development with around 2500 apartments. Like the new nearby Angola International Airport, it was built by the Chinese company China International Fund , which also owns the settlement.
