action

Marleen's life is stagnating: It was a long time ago that she graduated from high school, she can't really decide on the right course of study, instead she works in a cinema. All of her school friends have already moved out of home and are enjoying their lives, while Marleen spends all of her savings on a fine leather armchair - a change in her life seems far away.

Her brother Erik, who is several years older than her, is quite different: he is a globetrotter, earns a living as a writer of travel reports and has already traveled extensively on six continents. Erik is currently visiting his family back home and talking about his last extended trip around the world. Both parents are delighted to note that a publisher is interested in publishing Erik's stories as a monograph . Marleen, who hopes for advice from her brother on how to make something out of her life, is just annoyed that Erik, instead of useful tips, obviously only gives stories from the other end of the world. Erik later gives his disappointed sister a mason jar , in which she is supposed to collect scraps of paper with written, experienced adventures. But since she should not only experience one thing , but as much as possible, he calls it a multi-made glass .

Erik would like to leave again the following morning: first to Hamburg to negotiate with the publisher about the publication of his book, and then with the Beluga II to Antarctica - the last continent he has not yet traveled to. On the way to the train station he tries to convince Marleen, who is driving him, just YES! to say about life and its possibilities - she would also experience a lot like this. Just as she is getting involved and both of them turn up a song on the radio loudly and sing along, a truck crashes into the passenger side. While Marleen is delivered to the hospital with several head injuries and a broken forearm, Erik dies at the scene of the accident.

Marleen blames herself for the accident and hugs her brother's backpack after her hospital stay. In doing so, she finds the ticket for the Beluga II, which leaves for the South Pole in a few days and only makes this journey every six months. Without further ado , Marleen decides to take this trip instead of her dead brother, and sets off with light luggage and her multipurpose glass .

At the city bus station, her tour seems to have ended, as her money is not enough for a trip to Hamburg. Here she meets Ben, who is waiting in vain for his traveling companion . Just as Marleen is about to get into his car, the extroverted vlogger Zoë intervenes, duping Marleen with the idea of hitchhiking to Hamburg. At a rest stop, Zoë secures a place for both of them in the cab of an opera-loving Russian truck driver. He loaded a tiger with a cage as cargo; also a goat as "food" for the big cat. When the driver wants to shoot the goat during a break and then feed it, Zoë starts a "rescue operation" and flees into the forest with the goat and Marleen. In the next town, Zoë clears up two places in a coach full of senior citizens. The driver accepts both of them as passengers if they don't let anyone go into the clogged toilet. However, after the goat urinates on the bus, Marleen has to leave the bus in an open field.

Without a clue where exactly she is, she finds shelter at night in a tree house hotel . Since she cannot afford a room, the owner puts her in a room with a large wasp's nest. She tries to remove it by hitting it outside through the open window with an old tennis racket hanging on the wall as a decoration . After this painful experience for Marleen, she is allowed to move into the dusty room of the deceased grandmother of the owner. Here she is leafing through an old atlas and remembers her brother's stories.

The next morning she sells the goat to a farmer and sits down at the side of the road, doubtful. Here she meets Ben again, who invites her again to ride with him. During the trip, Marleen tells her companion that her brother gave her the trip to Antarctica as a present. In addition to the extraordinary travel destination, Ben is particularly surprised that the transfer to the port is missing in this alleged gift, which is why Marleen is now wandering haphazardly through Germany. They exchange ideas about their wishes in life, whereby it turns out that both of them do not want to realize their dreams for fear of possible failure. When they walk through a meadow full of fireflies during a stopover , Marleen is relieved of her worries for a brief moment. But memories of the accident quickly come back and Marleen has a small nervous breakdown. To take a rest, Ben drives to a motel .

This motel is also a popular hangout for rockers having a karaoke party. While rocker Rosa sings a song, Marleen and Ben sit by and talk about their journey. Ben is sure that the "gift" trip on purpose does not include a trip to the ship, so that Marleen learns to get out of herself and to dare something. In mourning for her brother, Marleen yells at Ben that this is none of his business and that he should get out of her life as soon as possible. Shortly afterwards she is knocked down by Rosa because Marleen has destroyed her song. Marleen and Rosa spend the night in prison together. The next morning Marleen covers the rest of the way to Hamburg by train.

Although the police drove the last few meters to the port in Hamburg, she barely missed her ship. She bursts into tears and stays on the dock until late at night. Again Ben surprises her here. Marleen tells him her true story, whereupon Ben suggests writing down the experiences of the last few days and putting them in the multi-jar . In fact, they do this together until the next morning and then return home. At her brother's funeral, Marleen opens the glass and tears the scraps of paper with her notes into her brother's grave, which obviously makes her easier.

A few days later, Marleen is ready to go on new adventures. Together with Ben she leaves home to fill her glass jar with new experiences.

review

Reviews

Antje Wessels from Filmstarts particularly praised Haase's play, but found the film to be "completely in the tradition of obvious role models" Keinohrhasen and Kokowääh . Screenwriter Finn Christoph Stroeks series “just loosely connected stations, some of which are more weird, others less”. In addition, the dramaturgical bracket "badly scratches the credibility of the story". Without Haase, Vielmachglas would be “not nearly as charming as the road movie comedy staged according to common feel-good mechanisms is now. The road trip itself is much more amusing than the only partially credible family drama around it. "

Hamburger Abendblatt reviewer Peter Zander described Vielmachglas as a “clumsy comedy” which, however, was “tailored entirely to Jella Haase”. He criticized that the "characters are not flesh and blood, just caricatures", "who always do exactly what you think shouldn't happen now?" Zander also found that not only Haase, but also the two supporting actors Juliane Köhler and Uwe Ochsenknecht seemed “criminally under-challenged”.

Gross profit

The film celebrated its world premiere on March 5, 2018 at the Cinedom in Cologne . The release for a public demonstration of the production took place just three days later on March 8th. Vielmachglas reached around 65,000 viewers in 356 cinemas on its first screening weekend and was the highest newcomer behind the US productions Red Sparrow , Black Panther , Die Verlegerin , Fifty Shades of Gray - Liberated Lust and Game Night at number six on the German cinema charts . The gross profit was 535,000 euros.
