Viktor Ludwig von Marnitz (born October 1, jul. / 13. October  1890 greg. As Victor Louis Marnitz in Mitau , Courland Governorate , Russian Empire ; in the 12 July 1910 Prussian added peerage; † thirtieth November 1960 in Marburg ( Lahn) ) was a German officer , most recently in the rank of major general in the Wehrmacht .

Life

Marnitz came from a Baltic German aristocratic family. He was born as the son of the Slavist and later professor at the Prussian War Academy (since 1904) Ludwig Robert von Marnitz (born November 6, 1857 in Papendorf (Central Livonia ), today Rubene in Kocēnu pagasts ( Latvia ); † December 2, 1929 in Berlin-Wilmersdorf ) and Sophie, b. Maurach (born December 8, 1860 in Oberpahlen (today: Estonia ), † May 13, 1914 in Berlin-Wilmersdorf). At the age of 18 he joined the German Army with the pioneers . As an officer he took part in the First World War and was assigned to the General Staff after the war . In 1920 he was finally officially retired from the Reichswehr . At the same time, he had already started studying civil engineering at the Technical University of Munich in 1919 , which he successfully completed in 1922 with the academic degree of graduate engineer . He then worked from 1922 to 1931 as a civil engineer at Dyckerhoff & Widmann AG in Munich. From April 8, 1932, he was employed in the inspection of the fortresses of the army (In Fest) for the expansion of the Heilsberger Dreieck , a military defense system in East Prussia . On September 15, 1932, he became a civilian employee at the Army Arms Office in the Reichswehr Ministry . After the seizure of power by the Nazis, he was on 1 October 1932 as an officer in the Landwehr taken. On May 1, 1935, he was finally reactivated for the Wehrmacht . He did his service with the pioneer troop . On June 19, 1937 he married Ilse, geb. Regret. During the Second World War he was commander of the Pioneer School I in Berlin-Karlshorst, then commander of various units. After the end of the war he was briefly in captivity from May 8, 1945 to July 7, 1945. In 1947 he was temporarily managing director of the Osterholz-Scharmbeck adult education center . Later he worked as a freelance writer and translator.
