Volker Metzler

Volker Metzler (born January 22, 1965 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) is a German theater director , actor , and photographer .

Life

After studying acting at the “Hans Otto” theater school in Leipzig , he started his first engagement in Halle / S in 1990 . to director Peter Sodann . Just two years later he followed the call of Horst Schönemann , who was then chief director of the Dresden State Theater, and worked as an assistant director a. a. with Irmgard Lange , Klaus Dieter Kirst and Tobias Wellemeyer . From 1994 to 1998 he headed the Theater in der Fabrik, as an artistically independent venue for the Dresden State Theater. After founding the independent theater group "Dresdner Ensemble" and guest productions a. a. at the Volkstheater Rostock , Badische Landesbühne and the Theater Vorpommern , he was drawn back to Halle / S., where he worked for two years as a drama director at the Neuen Theater / Schauspiel Halle. From 2001 to 2008 he was employed as a senior director at the Young Generation Theater in Dresden. During this time he intensified his collaboration with the stage and costume designer Grit Dora von Zeschau , the dancer | Choreographer Katja Erfurth and the composer Karsten Gundermann . In spring 2008 he founded the studio and art theater "DRAMATEN" in Dresden. His productions between 2008 and 2012 were funded by the Kulturstiftung Sachsen , the Kulturstiftung der Dresdner Bank and the Office for Culture and Monument Protection of the State Capital Dresden . Together with the director Lutz Graf , he founded the werkstatt in autumn 2008. DRAMATEN - an ISO 9001 certified training and further education center for the performing arts in Dresden. Between 2012 and 2014 he worked regularly as a guest director and photographer at Theater Plauen-Zwickau . While working on the production of The Rocky Horror Show , he met the stage and costume designer Claudia Charlotte Burchard , with whom he has formed a permanent production team since then and who designs and realizes all work at theaters together. From the 2017/2018 season, Volker Metzler worked at the Theater an der Parkaue - Junge Staatstheater Berlin as acting director and deputy artistic director. His opening production at the Theater an der Parkaue - Young State Theater Berlin "Beben" by Maria Milisavljevic was nominated for the Friedrich Luft Prize 2017 of the Berliner Morgenpost . After accusations of racism in connection with the production “The journey around the world in 80 days”, his employment was terminated at the end of the 2018/2019 season.

At the Staatstheater Cottbus he will open the 2019/2020 season with the world premiere of the winning play of the Kleist Prize for Young Dramatists "Warten auf Sturm" by Peter Thiers .

Racism allegations

Racism allegations against Volker Metzler became public at the end of June 2019. He was accused of having racially insulted a dark-skinned actress several times during the rehearsal work for the production "The journey around the world in 80 days" at the Theater an der Parkaue Berlin. The actress left the production after repeated attempts at clarification. For fear of professional disadvantages, she only made the incidents public in spring 2019.

In July 2018, the theater took personal consequences and warned Volker Metzler. In April 2019, the production was finally canceled and Volker Metzler released. His employment at the Theater an der Parkaue ended at the end of the 2018/2019 season
