Election to the 17th state parliament of Saarland
The election for the 17th state parliament of Saarland is expected to take place in 2022.
Electoral system
In Saarland, the representatives are elected in general, equal, direct, secret and free elections for 5 years according to the principles of proportional representation. All Germans within the meaning of Article 116 (1) of the Basic Law who have reached the age of eighteen on the day of the election, have lived in Saarland for at least three months or are otherwise habitually staying there and are not excluded from voting are entitled to vote.
The voters have a total of only one vote and with this vote they elect a party or group of voters whose candidates are nominated by the parties and groups of voters on nominations. These list proposals can be put up as district election proposals for the three constituencies and as state election proposals for Saarland. A state election proposal may only be approved if a district election proposal has also been approved for at least one of the three state electoral districts.
Starting position
Previous election 2017
The CDU gained votes in the 2017 election and was by far the strongest party with over 40 percent, followed by the SPD with just under 30 percent. The left defended its position as the third strongest force despite slight losses. The AfD was able to reach the state parliament with 6.2 percent when it participated for the first time, which neither the Greens nor the FDP managed to do .
After the election, another black-red coalition was formed, which can fall back on 41 of the 51 seats in the state parliament; this is the clearest majority of a state government in all 16 German state parliaments. Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer remained Prime Minister .
On March 1, 2018 Tobias Hans (CDU) was elected as the new Prime Minister, because Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer took over the office of Secretary General of the CDU and then announced her resignation as Saarland Prime Minister.
