The coat of arms of North Macedonia was originally introduced for the Yugoslav Socialist Republic of Macedonia by the constitution of July 27, 1946 and adopted by the independent state of Macedonia in 1991 with minor changes. On November 16, 2009 the red star at the top was removed from the coat of arms; the current version has been in use since then.

description

The coat of arms consists of a symmetrical wreath of wheat ears, tobacco leaves and poppy seeds, connected by a ribbon with the red and white pattern of a traditional costume.

In the oval room in the middle of the wreath there is a rising golden sun behind a blue mountain, at the foot of which rivers and lakes are depicted. The coat of arms is supposed to represent the country's wealth, struggle and freedom. The model for the structure of the coat of arms was the national coat of arms of the Soviet Union , the scheme of which was repeated by many coats of arms of socialist states and which can still be found in some national coats of arms.

history

Another proposal for a North Macedonian coat of arms

After independence, all attempts to introduce a new coat of arms have failed. A proposal from 1992 to use an old national symbol of North Macedonia, a golden lion in a red shield, as a coat of arms, failed due to the resistance of the Albanian ethnic group and the fact that both North Macedonian parties such as the VMRO-DPMNE and the Bulgarian coat of arms use this motif . As a result, the coat of arms has only been depicted on North Macedonian passports since 2005.

In 2009 the coat of arms was slightly changed by removing the five-pointed, red, gold-rimmed star , the traditional symbol of communism , attached to the top .
