The Wasserkuppenrhön , named after its highest mountain and also after the highest of the entire Rhön , Wasserkuppe ( 950 m above sea level ), is an exposed high ridge and natural area of this low mountain range in the Hessian district of Fulda and in the Bavarian district of Rhön-Grabfeld . Together with the Langen Rhön and its eastern slope , it forms the Rhön headquarters . Worth mentioning is the Red Moor , which is located in this natural area.

The name Wasserkuppenrhön was defined as a natural area in 1968 as part of the natural spatial structure ( M = 1: 200,000) and assigned as follows:

In the south the area is contiguous, in the north and northwest foothills and single mountains dominate. The country is hardly forested in the north. In the south, coniferous forest and mixed forest partly determine the landscape.
Demarcation
The Milseburger Kuppenrhön , which belongs to the Kuppenrhön , borders in the west and north . The border runs roughly along the villages of Mosbach - Sandberg - Schachen (all Gersfeld ), Schwarzerden - Sieblos - Eselsbrunn (all Poppenhausen ), Dietges ( Hilders ) and Reulbach - Seiferts (both Ehrenberg ), whereby it ends between the latter two.
Furthermore, the Hochrhön is adjacent to associated natural space units. From the above, the border to the Upper Ulstertal runs to the south, west of Melperts and Wüstensachsen , later to Ottilienstein more or less to the federal highway 278 . Along this leads to the Hessian-Bavarian border together with the Langen Rhön and finally a short stretch to the eastern slope of the Langen Rhön .
In the direction of Mosbach, the Dammersfeld ridge is part of the southern Hochrhön .
geology
The Wasserkuppenrhön consists of phonolite and basalt , with tertiary sediments in between. The high plateau is an olivine - nephelinite plate that drops steeply to the south, west and east, and merges into foothills and individual mountains to the north. The base of the mountain is formed by red sandstone and shell limestone.
There is mostly loamy soil above the rock layer. In the south of the area is the red moor , which is up to seven meters thick and has been partially dismantled and is now being renatured. Lignite was mined near Sieblos .

The Wasserkuppenrhön with its harsh climate is sometimes exposed to strong winds due to its altitude. The annual average temperature on the Wasserkuppe is 4.5 ° C, the average amount of precipitation 1000 to 1100 mm. There are an average of 4.2 hours of sunshine a day and 207 rainy days a year. The air humidity is around 84.6% over the year.
Sport and tourism
The Wasserkuppe airfield and the German Gliding Museum are located on the Wasserkuppe, while the Wasserkuppe ski and toboggan arena is on its northern slope . There was a ski lift with a slope on the north slope of the Eubeberg. The Hochrhönring runs through the area .
