The Abtsrodaer Kuppe , also called Abtsroder Kuppe , is 904.8  m above sea level. NHN high secondary summit of the Wasserkuppe in the Rhön . It is located near Abtsroda in the Hessian district of Fulda .

Characteristic of the elevation is its unforested dome made of basalt rocks, which makes it a popular vantage point - especially with a view to the north. The hilltop is used as a take-off point for paragliders .

The Abtsrodaer Kuppe rises in the Hohe Rhön . It is part of the Hessian Rhön Nature Park and the Rhön Biosphere Reserve . Its summit is around 740 m northeast of the Wasserkuppe, 1.1 km east-southeast of Abtsroda and 2 km east of Sieblos . Both villages are districts of Poppenhausen , to whose municipality the summit region belongs. The Ehrenberg district of Reulbach is 2.8 km northeast of the summit . Somewhat away are Dietges (north-north-west) and Brand (north-north-east), two districts of the Hilders community .

Natural allocation

The Abtsrodaer Kuppe belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35) to the main unit Hohe Rhön (354), subunit Hochrhön (354.1), natural area Wasserkuppenrhön (354.10). To the north, the landscape falls into the natural area of Milseburger Kuppenrhön (353.21), which in the main unit Vorder- und Kuppenrhön (353) belongs to the subunit Kuppenrhön (353.2).

Fulda-Werra watershed

Part of the Fulda-Werra watershed runs over the Abtsrodaer Kuppe . The water of the rivers that run from the summit towards the west reaches the Weser through the Haardt and Lütter and the Fulda river , while the rivers that run northwards also enter the Weser through the Schlichtwasser , Brandbach and Ulster creeks and the Werra Weser.

Protected areas

On the northeast flank of the Abtsrodaer Kuppe, directly below the Hochrhönring, is the nature reserve (NSG) Nordhang Wasserkuppe ( CDDA no. 318864; designated 1997; 95  hectares in size). Parts of the Hessian Rhön landscape protection area (CDDA no. 378477; 1967; 410.31  km² ) and the Hessian Rhön bird sanctuary (VSG no. 5525-351; 360.8 km²) are located on the hilltop . Parts of the fauna-flora-habitat area Hochrhön (FFH no. 5525-351; 48.09 km²) are also located on it.

Traffic and walking

West-northwest past the Abtsrodaer Kuppe leads from Poppenhausen through Tränkhof and Sieblos to Abtsroda the state road  3307, which meets the L 3068 coming from Dietges on the northeastern edge of Abtsroda . The latter leads north past the summit and then up to the Wasserkuppe and on to the federal road 278 ( Gersfeld - Obernhausen - Wüstensachsen ). The three streets are sections of the Hochrhönring .

Starting at these roads, the Abtsrodaer Kuppe can be hiked on paths and paths, for example on the common section of the European long-distance hiking trails E3 and E6 running between Abtsroda and the Wasserkuppe .
