The Ernst Bretz winery in Bechtolsheim is a winery in the Rheinhessen wine-growing region . Viticulture began in 1721. The estate has been in the ninth generation since 1987. The corporate form is a registered businessman .

history

The first vines were planted on Petersberg in 1721 to produce wine for the Welschnonnen monastery in Mainz . It was a mixed farm with agriculture and viticulture typical of Rheinhessen at the time . The winery was enlarged in 1907 and bottle wine marketing began . In 1931 the company ceased farming completely and concentrated on wine. From 1956 Ernst Bretz (eighth generation) took over the winery and continued the pursuit of quality. It was exported to the United States and Japan , where the noble sweet ice wines are valued. The majority (60%) is sold directly to private customers, the rest through retailers.

Grape varieties

White and red grape varieties are grown in equal parts on 37 hectares . Among the white wines include Riesling , Pinot Blanc , Pinot Gris , Chardonnay , Sylvaner , Rivaner , Sauvignon Blanc , Gewurztraminer , Scheurebe , Huxelrebe , Bacchus and Kerner . Red wines are made from the varieties Spätburgunder , Dornfelder , Blauer Portugieser , Regent , St. Laurent , Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot and Frühburgunder . Rosé wines come from the Portuguese, early and pinot noir.

Locations

Owning mainly includes vineyards on Petersberg with individual layers: Klosterberg, Homberg, Wingertstor and Sonnenberg on the district of Bechtolsheim. In this climatically preferred vineyard location, the vines for the production of wines grow on the fertile loess - clay soils .

Vinification

The grapes are destemmed , i.e. without a stem or stem, pressed and gently pressed.

Awards

From the 1960s, the wines received prestigious awards and medals. The winery has been in the top 100 list of DLG- recommended wineries since 2008 . In 2012 it reached place 60, in 2011 it was still place 70. The DLG Top 100 wine producers 2019 are in place 28.

At the state award for wine and sparkling wine there was the State Prize of the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Economics and Viticulture in the years 2008 to 2011. In 2015, the winery won its ninth State Prize in a row, because the winegrowers who actually specialize in Burgundy were also earlier than others from abroad Varieties and experimented with oak barrels. In the choice of winemaker of the year, they came in second and had to admit defeat to the Manz winery from nearby Weinolsheim .

At the International Green Week Berlin 2010, the winery received the “Best Regent Producer” award from the then parliamentary state secretary Julia Klöckner from the Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection . The winery received this award again in 2013.

A jury of wine experts from the wine magazine Selection rated the winery 27th and thus one of the best 50 winemakers in Germany in 2012.

The Berlin Wine Guide 2012 awarded the first place for the Chardonnay Barrique, there was a "very good" for Chardonnay Spätlese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Bretz-Rot, Dornfelder Barrique, St. Laurent Barrique and the Riesling Eiswein.

The Feinschmecker counts the winery in his handbook among the best German wineries.

At the international Austrian Wine Challenge Vienna there was a star and a gold medal (2011). At the Interwine China 2011 wine fair , the Chardonnay was named “Best ice wine”.

At the DLG Federal Honorary Award 2013 in Würzburg, the brothers Horst and Harald Bretz were able to win the award “Winemaker of the Year 2013” ​​with the Federal Honorary Prize for Wine in Gold. Over 300 wineries took part in the competition.

2016, the winery was awarded the Grand Prix of the middle class  of the Oskar Patzelt Foundation .
