Weitenau has been a part of the municipality of Steinen in the Baden-Württemberg district of Lörrach since January 1, 1974 . The 6.78 square kilometer municipal area extends northeast of Steinen and connects the Wiesental with the Kleiner Wiesental .

history

Place name

Place name endings with -au often indicate that the place is on a river. It was created by redesigning the Middle Low German â [-ɔː] "Ache, Bach, Kleiner Fluss" to -au.

Weitenau was first mentioned in 1100 as Witnowe , in 1138 as Witnowa ( WUB 2,3), among other things in 1140 in a papal bull from Wintenowa (WUB 2,14). Further mentions of the place name that have been written down over centuries are mentioned below : Witinovva 1173 and 1189 (WUB 2.172 and 2.266), Wyttnovva approx. 1186 (Herrgott, Gen. Habs. 2,201), Wittewunowe 1257 (BaslU. 1,238), Wittenöwe 1275 (FDA 1,163), Witnowe 1321 (KS Blasien (Amringen)), villa 1344 ( K. Berain 9598 Propstei), Wittnow 1350 (K. Village history

After the first mention in 1100, the village appears in 1344 under the control and spell of the Weitenau monastery and under the bailiwick of the margraves of Hachberg-Sausenberg . During this time, the Bailiwick of Weitenau also included the towns of Wieslet , Demberg, Eichholz, Henschenberg and Sallneck .

The settlement and the area are likely to have belonged to the rule of the Lords of Warth . The people and goods of the St. Blasien monastery belonged to the Dinghof of the monastery in Steinen in 1413 . Weitenau time were a former belonging to St. Blasien Benedictine provost , which at the time of the Reformation was lifted.

Under the Margraves of Baden , Weitenau belonged to the Landgraviate of Sausenberg, Oberamt Rötteln , came to Oberamt Schopfheim in 1809 and finally to the district of Lörrach in 1936/39. Since the regional reform in Baden-Wuerttemberg on January 1, 1974 it became a part of the municipality of Steinen.

In July 2000, the 900 year anniversary of the village was celebrated in Weitenau.

Weitenau is a loosely built valley settlement in the northward side valley of the river , where several streams flow together. It is located five kilometers northeast of Steinen, is a street village , which is mainly populated along the valley road (district road 6346 and state road 136). The road running in north-south direction along the valley axis connects Steinen with the Kleiner Wiesental. Right in the center of the village, Scheideckstraße (L136) branches off to the northwest in the direction of Schlächtenhaus, which extends over the Scheideckpass to Kandern .

The Schwammerich brook flows through the village along the valley road and forms a narrow valley to Steinen, some of which is only around 50 meters in length, and where it flows into the Steinbach.

To the north of the populated core, the L 136 leads over a small pass crossing at the level of the junction to the Schillighof at an altitude of 420  m above sea level. NHN to Wieslet .

In addition to the village of Weitenau, the district includes the hamlets (Zinken) Schillighof, Farnbuck in the north, Ausserdorf in the south and the Hummelberg residential area to the northwest .

The highest elevations on the Weitenau district are the 595  m high Hornberg and the 545  m Häfnet.

The district Weitenau located on the south edge of the Ausraumzone between the Black Forest and the red sandstone back of Weitenauer highlands . In addition to red sandstone, the main component of the Weitenauer Bergland is Rotliegend , which can also be seen in the meadow's river bed. Smaller meadow tributaries such as the Steinenbach have cut the slopes of the rather flat foothills of the Weitenau mountains. At these points, the Weitenau Mountains are characterized by real table mountains , which drop steeply, but widen towards the bottom, but have poorly structured flanks . Due to the historical affiliation to the margraviate of Baden-Durlach, the population is predominantly Protestant and belongs to the parish of Vorderes Kleines Wiesental , but does not have its own church. Between the Reformation and 1891, Weitenau belonged to the Weitenau monastery church , which was a Protestant parish church. Since then, the parish seat has been a Schlächtenhaus, whose district also includes Endenburg. There are Protestant churches in the three neighboring towns of Wieslet , Hofen and Endenburg . The parish of Steinen-Höllstein-Maulburg-Schopfheim is responsible for the Catholics .

Culture and sights

Townscape, buildings and sights

Weitenau town hall

The village is the Einmündebereich the valley and the Scheideck road on which the town hall is located. The house with a gable roof and two full storeys has a conspicuous roof turret with a clock. Until 1960 the house also served as a school building. The tool shed for the volunteer fire brigade is attached to the extension on the courtyard side. A wood saw stood opposite the town hall until 1989.

To the south of the town hall, the valley path branches off to a turning loop , around which a playground and a football field, the school and the Weitenau hall are grouped. The hall, which is also the sports facility of the wrestling club, is considered the sporting and cultural center of the place and its surroundings.

The Steinen bird park, a good one kilometer west of the village center, is already part of the Schlächtenhaus -Hofen district.

In addition to a tennis club, a gymnastics and sports club, there is also a women's club in Weitenau.

Particularly successful participants of are competitive Community (WG) Weitenau-Wieslet , have helped to fight again in the Bundesliga, such as 2014 in the second ringer Bundesliga . The competition community was created in 1971 from the merger of TuS Weitenau and SV Wieslet. The flat share has a squad and a youth team.

The choral society Harmonie Weitenau originally descends from the male choir, which took part in a singing festival in Kandern as early as 1830. A written record is attested in 1844, in 1864 the association was re-established, which at that time consisted of 15 men. In November 1883, eleven women were incorporated into the choir.

In addition to a section of the Steinen Music Association, the Weitenau-Schlächtenhaus Harmonica Orchestra, founded on December 7, 1963, is also located in Weitenau .

Educational institutions

The Ernst Schleith primary school, named after the painter and draftsman Ernst Schleith , is located in the center of the village of Weitenau . As a neighborhood school, it accepts not only students from Weitenau but also students from Endenburg , Schlächtenhaus and Wieslet. In addition, there is also a day-care center for children and a kindergarten in the building, which is supported by the two associations of the Evangelical Churches in the Kleiner Wiesental and the Evangelical Parish of Schlächtenhaus.

Volunteer firefighter

The Steinen volunteer fire brigade also has a department in Weitenau with 35 active members. In 2018, the department was involved in eight missions and participated in 17 exercises. In addition, the fire brigade is also involved in organizing the village festival and the disc fire.

Events

In addition to carnival events, open-air concerts and an open-air theater take place at the Schillighof .

economy

In addition to restaurant businesses, the König Garten- und Landschaftsbau, Baumschule und Recycling company, founded in 1978, is the largest commercial enterprise in the town with around 35 employees. The nursery has existed since 1947.
