The Wendelinus Chapel is a baroque chapel in Markt Mönchberg in the Lower Franconian district of Miltenberg in Bavaria . It is dedicated to Saint Wendelin .

background

The farmers of Mönchberg have been venerating Saint Wendelin since the 15th century . He is also the second patron saint of the Church of St. John the Baptist . That is why Wendelinustag became the highest public holiday of the year in local events. On this day, foreign priests also made confession and several clergy celebrated the service .

history

First there was a wayside shrine at the current location of the chapel on the road to Schmachtenberg , where the paths to Schmachtenberg, Röllbach , Eschau , Mechenhard and Erlenbach cross. The first small Wendelinus chapel already existed in 1401. The income from the offering box proves its existence. In 1676 this first chapel, as it was damaged, was replaced by a larger subsequent building. This was provided with a roof turret with a bell in 1702 . The farmers first donated grain to the offering box . Money was later donated, resulting in repeated thefts . In the interior there was an altar and carved wooden figures. In 1744, the master builder Johann Martin Schmitt from Miltenberg replaced the second chapel building with a side church, the Wendelinus chapel, which still exists today. As they were very satisfied with his achievements in building the chapel, he was also commissioned to build the new Mönchberg church in 1748. Numerous visitors and pilgrims now came to the chapel. Additional confessionals were set up outdoors on pilgrimage days. The custom of pilgrimage was continued by the Hobbachers until 1931 . The altar of the old Mönchberg church, which was demolished in 1748, is now in the Wendelinus chapel. The sacristy was added later. Until 1814 the chapel belonged to the diocese of Mainz .

The ceiling is painted with motifs of the Wendelinus veneration by the painter J. Gotthold Rettinger from Aschaffenburg . Above the altar is the Lamb of God and a representation of Saint Wendelin in front of the Holy Cross . He can be seen with sheep under the gallery . The baroque pulpit from 1751 was designed by Franz Eichhorn from Klingenberg . On the cover is a figure of Christ with a lamb on his shoulder. Until 1954, the Stations of the Cross from the first Mönchberg church were on the walls . In 1972 the originals of the figures of Saint Wendelin on the high altar and two figures of Saint Sebastian and Saint Rochus were stolen. In 1986 these figures were re-carved by the woodcarver Vinzent-Demetz from Val Gardena in Tyrol .
