history
Originally sold to a group of land buyers as part of the Fair Haven charter, West Haven was separated as a separate area on October 20, 1792; Immediately after the separation, the constituent city assembly took place. Although the independence of the two areas had been confirmed by the Vermont House of Representatives, it was not until 1823 that the two parishes were each granted their own representative in the Vermont House of Representatives; previously both communities had to be content with a common representative.
From the beginning, the area was dominated by agriculture. Since the neighboring community of Fair Haven and the local centers of Rutland and Whitehall are within easy reach, West Haven's economic boom resulted in a significant migration of the population. Since no rail connection and no major road was built through the area, West Haven has remained isolated from industrialization to this day.
