Wilhelm Mattes

Wilhelm Mattes (born July 8, 1892 in Winterspüren , † December 27, 1952 in Überlingen ) was a German economist and politician ( DVP , later GB / BHE ).

Life and work

After graduation Mattes took a degree in economics in Strasbourg , Berlin , Freiburg and Heidelberg on which he in 1920 with the graduation to the Dr. rer. pole. finished. During the Nazi era he worked as a tax advisor in Mannheim . Since 1945 Mattes was head of the financial administration for the areas Palatinate , Saar as well as for Rheinhessen on the left bank of the Rhine .

Mattes joined the DVP during the Weimar Republic and was elected to the state parliament of the Baden Republic in 1921 , to which he was a member until 1933. Since 1925 he was chairman of the DVP parliamentary group here. From June 26, 1931 to March 10, 1933, he served as Minister of Finance in the governments of the State of Baden led by Presidents Franz Josef Wittemann and Josef Schmitt .

After the Second World War , Mattes did not belong to any party. On October 12, 1945, he was appointed Hessian Minister of State for Finance by the US military government and was thus a member of the state government led by Prime Minister Karl Geiler . On November 7, 1946, he was replaced in this position by Robert Nöll von der Nahmer . He later co-founded the GB / BHE in Hessen. In 1950 he was elected chairman of the GB / BHE in Hesse. From 1950 to 1952 he was a member of the state parliament of Württemberg-Baden and chairman of the DG / BHE parliamentary group there.
