Wilhelm Adolph Hans Heinrich von Below (born October 28, 1783 in Klein Machmin , † December 14, 1864 in Stralsund ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and inspector of the garrisons of the federal fortresses .

Life

Wilhelm was the son of Hans Ludwig von Below (* June 24, 1734; † January 2, 1785) and his wife Wilhelmine Christiane, born von Ploetz († March 8, 1822). The father was a Prussian Rittmeister a. D. , most recently in the cuirassier regiment "Margrave Friedrich" , Herr auf Redlin and Runow as well as Privy Councilor and Chamber President in the service of Princely Anhalt-Koethen . His brother was Lieutenant General Ludwig von Below (1779-1849).

Below visited the cadet houses in Stolp and Berlin . Then he was hired on March 1, 1798 as a Junker in the Grenadier Guard Battalion of the Prussian Army and advanced to mid-March 1801 to ensign . When he was promoted to second lieutenant on February 28, 1806, he was transferred to the "Prince August" grenadier battalion, which formed the "von Kunheim" and "von Arnim" regiments from grenadier companies . During the Fourth Coalition War , Below was wounded in the battle of Auerstedt , took part in the retreat to Prenzlau and was captured when the Blücher corps surrendered.

After the war, Below was transferred to the regiment of the Guard on November 12, 1808 with a patent from July 24, 1802 , where he was promoted to captain and company commander until mid-March 1813 . During the Wars of Liberation , he acquired the Iron Cross II. Class for the battle of Großgörschen , and fought near Bautzen and Paris . On October 12, 1816, he came to the young Duke Ludwig von Anhalt-Köthen as a tutor . In this position he was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Ludwig on April 6, 1818 , before he returned to the 1st Guards Regiment on foot in mid-December 1818. From there he was commanded to serve as an adjutant to the governor of the Mainz fortress on October 2, 1824 . In 1825, Below received the Order of St. John and the service cross . He rose to lieutenant colonel on March 30, 1827 and was appointed commander of the 36th Infantry Regiment (4th Reserve Regiment) in Mainz on October 22, 1829 . In this position, Below received the Knight's Cross of the Leopold Order on December 10, 1829, and was promoted to colonel on March 30, 1830 . As such, from March 30, 1834, he was commander of the 35th Infantry Regiment for two years and then commander of the 12th Landwehr Brigade stationed in Neisse . In this position, Below was aggregated to the 35th Infantry Regiment on April 12, 1836 and awarded the Russian Order of St. Stanislaus I Class on October 5, 1836 . Promoted to major general on March 30, 1838, he was appointed commander of the 1st Guard Landwehr Brigade. He gave up this command on May 4, 1838 and took over the 2nd Guards Landwehr Brigade in Berlin. With the rank of division commander, Below was appointed inspector of the garrisons of the federal fortresses on October 26, 1843. On January 9, 1845, he was also given the powers of a division commander and, on the occasion of the Order's festival on January 19, 1845, the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class. On March 22, 1845 Below was promoted to lieutenant general before his on July 24, 1847 farewell with board took. He died on December 14, 1864 in Stralsund.
