Ludwig Dietrich Karl Wilhelm von Below (born July 31, 1779 in Köthen (Anhalt) , † October 10, 1859 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commandant of all cadet institutions .

Life

origin

He was the son of Hans Ludwig von Below (* June 24, 1734; † January 2, 1785) and his wife Wilhelmine Christiane, born von Ploetz († March 8, 1822). The father was a Prussian Rittmeister a. D. , most recently in the cuirassier regiment "Margrave Friedrich" , Herr auf Redlin and Runow as well as Privy Councilor and Chamber President in the service of Princely Anhalt-Koethen . The Prussian Lieutenant General Wilhelm von Below (1783–1864) was his brother.

Military career

Below attended the Cadet House from May 15, 1792 and then the Académie Militaire in Berlin . On December 27, 1796, he joined the Prussian Army's Grenadier Battalion No. 6 as a corporal , was promoted to ensign on January 4, 1797 with a patent from December 15, 1793 and to second lieutenant on March 7, 1797 . On September 26, 1805 he was appointed Adjutant General of General Karl Ludwig von Le Coq , chief of the Grenadier Guard Battalion . In this capacity, Below was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on January 20, 1806 . During the fourth coalition war he was briefly imprisoned by the surrender of the Hameln Fortress and was then made inactive.

After the Peace of Tilsit , Below came back to the army and on November 12, 1808 to the Regiment Garde on foot. There he was on June 9, 1809 staff captain and on October 22, 1810 captain and company commander in the regiment of the guard. On August 22, 1811 he was appointed governor of the Prince Elector of Hessen-Kassel and on August 26, 1811 was promoted to major in the army.

On November 1, 1815, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on July 8, 1816, he was accepted into the Order of St. John . With a patent dated April 4, 1819 Below was promoted to colonel on March 30, 1819 and awarded the Commander's Cross 1st Class of the House Order of the Golden Lion on April 23, 1819 . From May 10, 1821, he received the staff officer's salary of 1,800 thalers a year. On May 5, 1824, Below became a member of the military study commission and on September 17, 1825 director of the Potsdam military orphanage , and on October 20, 1825, he received confirmation that he was still an army officer. On January 18, 1827 Below received the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class. In 1830 he was given the title of “Director of the large military orphanage in Potsdam and Pretzsch Palace”; his predecessors had been “commanders” to date. On January 18, 1833, he was also awarded the Red Eagle Order III. Class and on March 30, 1833 the character of major general. On March 30, 1834 Below was appointed commander of all cadet institutes and on April 5, 1834 he received the patent as major general with the date of March 29, 1833. On January 26, 1837 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle II April 1842 promoted to lieutenant general. On January 14, 1844, he received the Order of Saint Anne I Class, on January 19, 1845, the Order of the Red Eagle First Class with Oak Leaves, and on the occasion of his 50th anniversary in service, on December 24, 1846, he received the diamonds for the Order of the Red Eagle I. Class. On January 3, 1847, Below received the Grand Cross of the Order of the Golden Lion. On July 20, 1848, he was his farewell to the statutory pension granted. He died in Berlin on October 10, 1849 and was buried in the French cemetery on October 14, 1859 .

family

Below married on August 14, 1809 in Potsdam Pauline Amalie von Le Coq (* August 11, 1787 - December 6, 1863), a daughter of General Karl Ludwig von Le Coq . She was also buried in the French cemetery. The marriage remained childless. However, the couple adopted Amalie Pauline Therburg (born June 16, 1816). On June 25, 1820, she received royal permission to use the name and coat of arms of Below . On June 23, 1833 she married the lieutenant a. D. Rudolf von Canitz and Dallwitz (* February 24, 1809).
