Sigismund Detlof Gotthilf Wilhelm von Winterfeldt (born January 22, 1824 in Berlin , † June 27, 1906 in Darmstadt ) was a Prussian general of the cavalry and Canon of Brandenburg .

Life

Wilhelm was a son of the chamber judge August von Winterfeldt (1789–1864) and his wife Ulrike (1792–1882), daughter of the Prussian general Karl Ludwig von Le Coq (1757–1829). The politician Ulrich von Winterfeldt (1823–1908) was his older brother.

Military career

After visiting the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin , Winterfeldt was transferred to the 2nd Dragoons Regiment of the Prussian Army as a second lieutenant on August 12, 1841 . From the beginning of October 1847 he was sent to the General War School for further training . Due to the March Revolution , the school was closed for a long time at the end of March 1848 and he was used as a regimental adjutant from September 1849. During the mobilization , Winterfeldt was adjutant of the mobile 6th Cavalry Brigade from November 1850 to February 1851 . He rose to prime lieutenant in August 1853 . As Rittmeister and squadron leader he was from mid-March to mid-September 1858 for the 2nd Landwehr Dragoons Regiment and then until early November 1858 as an adjutant at the General Command of III. Army Corps commands. With his appointment as squadron chief , Winterfeldt returned to his regular regiment on June 30, 1859 and, meanwhile promoted to major , took part in the battle at Lobositz during the war against Austria . After the war he was promoted to regular staff officer at the end of October 1866 . On March 5, 1869, Winterfeldt was initially commissioned to lead the 2nd Silesian Dragoons Regiment and on October 21, 1869 he was appointed regimental commander and on July 26, 1870 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel . In the war that followed against France , he led his association as a division cavalry in the 11th Infantry Division in front of Pfalzburg and Paris .

Awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class, he was promoted to colonel after the peace treaty in mid-January 1872 and was transferred to Glogau on October 12, 1875 as commander of the 9th Cavalry Brigade . Winterfeldt rose to major general at the end of September 1876 and was in command of Berlin from December 30, 1881 to August 29, 1882 . He was then commissioned to lead the Guard Cavalry Division and on November 21, 1882, he was promoted to lieutenant general and commander of this large unit . This was followed on November 15, 1887 as governor of Mainz . In this position, Winterfeldt was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle First Class with Oak Leaves with the Enamel Ribbon of the Order of the Crown in January 1888 on the occasion of the Order Festival and at the end of April 1888 he received the character of General of the Cavalry. On December 15, 1888, he was put up for disposal with the statutory pension .

Winterfeldt was a legal knight of the Order of St. John and Canon of Brandenburg. He died of a stroke on June 27, 1906 .

Winterfeldt married on October 9, 1850 in Landsberg with Mathilde von Below (1824-1900). The two daughters Amélie (* 1851) and Elisabeth (* 1854) emerged from the marriage.
