The Wittekindsberg nature reserve is located in the two cities of Porta Westfalica and Bad Oeynhausen in the Minden-Lübbecke district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It extends in the area of the Wittekindsberg and the Häverstädter Berg approximately from the ridge of the Wiehengebirge in the north to the federal highway 61 in the south. The area is around 114 hectares and is listed under the NSG identification MI-038.
The protection should serve to preserve the beech forest and mixed deciduous forest communities. These are in particular mountain elms - maple forest and maple- linden forest . In addition, the natural, sun-exposed Porta sandstone and limestone cliffs of the ridge in the Heersumer layers of the Malm are protected, such as B. the hawk wall . Furthermore, the anthropogenic exposure in the Dogger in the Wolfsschlucht is to be preserved.
The biotopes serve to preserve rare animal and plant species, especially heat-loving and wood-dwelling insects .
Most of the areas of the nature reserve are also located in the larger FFH area forests near Porta Westfalica (identification DE-3719-301); the corresponding areas are therefore part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas.
