Work Hard - Play Hard is a German documentary film by the director Carmen Losmann from 2011 . He deals with the new forms of work organization and methods of personnel management .
action
The film begins with (simulated) advice from Behnisch architects and consultants from the Quickborn team on the new Unilever - DA-CH headquarters in Hamburg . The next sequence, which documents the implementation of the desk sharing there , was recorded on the Accenture Campus Kronberg . Both sequences focus on the working environment and the structural conditions. They each stand for themselves.
After that, an interplay followed between different places between which the film jumps back and forth: An assessment center in Sales Marketing at SCHOTT Solar , an outdoor training for a team in the Lueneburg Heath , a scene collegial advice from Towers Watson - business consultants , a Area meeting at Kienbaum , a meeting of internal change agents in the DHL LEAN project and a SAP software presentation for talent management at Endress + Hauser . The documented conversations are punctually interrupted by interview-like monologues .
background
The film is completely underlaid with original sounds and works without speaking texts or comments . Only in a few scenes can subtly threatening sounds be heard in the background. It is visually designed with long, calm camera settings and drives in widescreen format.
Carmen Losmann's cinematic work is influenced by Harun Farocki , who also shot A New Product for Unilever with his film, which was shown in 2012 .
Reviews
The film was received positively in the national press - Süddeutsche Zeitung , Der Tagesspiegel , FAZ , TAZ Jungle World - and in the specialist press.
“Clairvoyant documentary film about the creeping changes in the modern world of work, which in the wake of digitization and under the auspices of flat hierarchies, tend towards the loss of privacy and a leveling of the boundary between work and leisure. The visually captivating film describes with analytical sharpness, but without judgmental comments, how modern office architecture, management fashions and personnel management are combined in the main idea of permanent self-optimization. An oppressive internal perspective on the new economy and its increasingly sophisticated methods of exploiting 'humane resources'. "
