biography
Not far from her hometown Kiruna , the then 15-year-old Stålnacke completed so-called Entry League FIS races on December 1st and 2nd, 2007 in Gällivare . In these two giant slaloms, she reached 17th and 23rd place and thus qualified for participation in regular FIS races . A week later, on December 8, 2007, a slalom was their first FIS race in Arvidsjaur, also in Sweden ; she finished it in 22nd place. After winning six FIS races, she celebrated her debut in the European Cup on March 1, 2011 in a slalom in the southern Polish city of Zakopane - although she was eliminated in the first run.
Her breakthrough came in the winter of 2013/2014. She first made her debut on November 16, 2013 at the slalom in Levi, Finland, in a World Cup race. As in the European Cup, this premiere was not crowned with success, as it was eliminated again in the first run. Then she secured her first victory in a European Cup race on January 7, 2014 in the Swiss town of Zinal , when she kept runner-up Mona Løseth at a distance of almost half a second in the giant slalom . Finally, at the end of the season, she achieved seventh place in the overall European Cup ranking and, with a wafer-thin lead, first place in the giant slalom ranking of this second highest racing series. In the 2014/2015 season she also took part in the Nor-Am Cup - the North American counterpart to the European Cup - for the first time. On the first four days of December 2014, she started in the towns of Aspen and Copper Mountain in the US state of Colorado in four races (two slalom and two giant slalom each). Apart from the first slalom, which she finished in sixth place, she was eliminated from the three other races in the first run. In the European Cup she won two giant slalom victories a little later and she was able to finish the winter as runner-up in both the overall and the giant slalom classification of this series.
The following 2015/2016 season, however, was overshadowed by injuries. At the end of November she broke the middle metacarpal bone of her right hand during giant slalom training in the run-up to a World Cup race in Aspen when she accidentally touched a goal pole. Stålnacke had to undergo an operation, but was able to train again a short time later. In the first giant slalom race of the European Cup season in Trysil , Norway , she only finished 36th due to the impairment, but one day later she was second in the slalom. However, it was to be her only podium finish this winter, because on December 27th - again during training for a World Cup giant slalom - she suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture in her knee in Lienz, Austria . The Swedish Ski Association announced that it will be out for about eight months. On December 5, 2016, she made her comeback at the European Cup slalom in Trysil and finished in 29th place. On February 15, 2017, she was able to win an FIS race for the first time after her injury and on March 5 of the same year she won a slalom of the Far East Cup in Sapporo, Japan .
Despite her promising talent, Ylva Stålnacke never took part in the Junior World Championships , the European Youth Olympic Festival or similar competitions. Although she earned her own starting place in the World Cup due to her good performance in the European Cup, she was initially unable to finish any of her races there for a long time - either she missed the qualification for the second round or she was eliminated in the first round. Stålnacke was more successful at national level: between 2008 and 2012 she took part in the Swedish junior championships and had her best placement in 2011 in Åre when she won the bronze medal in the giant slalom. Since 2009 she has also started at the regular state championships. On March 27, 2015, she secured the giant slalom title in Skellefteå - ahead of well-known competitors such as Sara Hector and Frida Hansdotter . On January 3, 2018, she reached the second round of a World Cup race for the first time at the slalom in Zagreb , was able to finish it and ultimately placed 17th.
As part of the Norrbottens idrottsgala held in Luleå - which honors outstanding athletes from the province of Norrbottens län - Stålnacke received the award in the “Newcomer of the Year” category in May 2014.
At the end of January 2020, she announced her retirement from top-class sport.
