After attending grammar school in Senec , she studied medicine at the Comenius University in Bratislava from 1985 to 1993 . She wrote a thesis on Crohn's disease in childhood and graduated in 1993 with the state examination. After Estermann had held the title of Dr. med. in Switzerland, the right to do so was revoked in the summer of 2012, as she is trained as a so-called professional doctor , which in Slovakia is awarded to all medical graduates along with the final diploma, but not from the Association of Swiss Assistant and senior physicians (VSAO) recognized doctoral degrees. She is now allowed to use the title MU Dr., Comenius University in Bratislava , acquired in Slovakia .

In 1995 she opened her own practice for complementary medicine and homeopathy in Lucerne. In 1999 Estermann received Swiss citizenship , she is a Slovak-Swiss citizen . In 2000 she joined the SVP.

She has been the owner of a consulting company since 2003. From 2004 to 2005 Estermann was a member of the board of directors of Cosmos AG , which  operates the Free University of Teufen  - a so-called title mill . Together with Manuel Brandenberg and her husband, Richard, she founded the Yvette Estermann Foundation in early 2010 , which she also presides over. The foundation is criticized as "selfish", it only serves "the election support" for Ms. Estermann.
