The Zellertal is a valley region in the east of the North Palatinate Mountains in Rhineland-Palatinate . The western part belongs to the Palatinate Donnersbergkreis , the eastern part to the Rhenish Hessian district of Alzey-Worms . The valley is named after the former municipality of Zell , which became part of the new local municipality of Zellertal in 1976 .

geography

The Zellertal as a Mulde valley with relatively flat slopes is bounded in the north and south by a chain of low elevations that are less than 300  m high. The distance between the two mountain ranges is 2 to 3 km. In between, the valley extends roughly from west to east, protected from north winds. In this direction it is also traversed by the Pfrimm , an almost 43 km long left tributary of the Rhine .

The valley exit in the east is about 135  m above sea level in Rheinhessen in the community of Monsheim . This includes the three first valley communities - Monsheim , Wachenheim and Mölsheim - upstream . To the west, on the Palatinate side, then follow the three districts of Zellertal ( Niefernheim , Zell and Harxheim ) and the local communities Einselthum , Albisheim and Marnheim . There the Zellertal ends after 12 km at 185  m altitude.

Attractions

The 15 m high and widely visible Zellertal memorial is a landmark of the valley . The expressionist Gothic-style monumental building was erected in 1928 as a war memorial in honor of the fallen soldiers of the First World War at an exposed vantage point next to Kreisstraße  64 between Zell and Mölsheim, which runs high on the slope . The baroque pilgrimage church of Zell is dedicated to Philipp von Zell , who is venerated as a saint in the diocese of Speyer .

Further cultural monuments are described for the individual local communities.

Economy and Infrastructure

Viticulture

The Zellertal forms the northern end of the Palatinate wine-growing region , while the Rhine-Hessian wine-growing region begins at the eastern end of the valley . The Zellertal wine-growing region , which is larger in area than the bare valley, has 15  vineyards with a vineyard area of 550 hectares. To the area are u. a. The viticulture communities of Bischheim , Rittersheim and Gauersheim also counted, which are located in the side valley of the Leiselsbach , a left tributary of the Pfrimm.

traffic

The Zellertal is opened up for individual traffic by the federal highway 47 ( Worms –Marnheim), which runs between the Autobahn 63 ( Kaiserslautern - Mainz ) in the west and the federal highway 271 ( Neustadt an der Weinstrasse - Alzey ) in the east. From the western edge of Wachenheim, the B 47 is expanded to the west as a bypass .

On Sundays and public holidays from the beginning of May to the end of October, the Zellertalbahn runs from Monsheim via Langmeil to Kaiserslautern .
