history

The place Zorbau was first mentioned in 1088, but is probably older and goes back to a Sorbian settlement. The place name is probably derived directly from the tribal name of the Sorbs. Traces of settlement in the area even go back to the Neolithic Age . Zorbau, Zorbonne, Zourbow, Czorbow, Zorbau - the place has had many names since it was first mentioned in 1088. The place is, however, much older. The four districts (Zorbau, Gerstewitz, Zörbitz and Nellschütz) point to a formerly Slavic origin. In a document of the Goseck monastery from 1135 it is written that Uda, the sister of Count Palatine Friedrich II. Died in Zorbau in 1088 and is buried in Goseck. Uda (also Oda or Hilaria) owned an estate in Zorbau, which probably includes the fortified church that still exists today. The Zorbauer Marienkirche is Romanesque style and is characterized by its careful construction.

Zorbau and its current districts of Gerstewitz, Nellschütz and Zörbitz belonged to the Mölsen court seat in the Electoral Saxon office of Weißenfels until 1815 , which belonged to the Secondogeniture Principality of Saxony-Weißenfels between 1656/57 and 1746 . In 1782 Zorbau had 46 houses, including a tavern and a brewery. At that time the place had 200 inhabitants.

As a result of the resolutions of the Congress of Vienna , Zorbau, Gerstewitz, Nellschütz and Zörbitz came to Prussia in 1815. They were in 1816 the county Weissenfels in the administrative district of Merseburg of the Province of Saxony allocated. With the industrialization of 1850, the number of citizens who were active in traditional agriculture, in the lignite industry and in chemistry increased. The first factory of the Saxon-Thuringian Actiengesellschaft für lignite utilization , which was one of the most important producers of lignite coal products, was built in Gerstewitz in 1856 .

On July 1, 1950, Nellschütz was incorporated into Zorbau. During the second district reform in the GDR, Zorbau with its districts Nellschütz, Gerstewitz and Zörbitz was assigned to the Hohenmölsen district in the Halle district in 1952 . Since 1994 Zorbau has belonged to the Weißenfels district, which was added to the Burgenland district in 2007.

The municipality of Zorbau was incorporated into the city of Lützen by law on January 1, 2011 and thereby lost its political independence. Until it was dissolved, it belonged to the Lützen-Wiesengrund administrative community , which had its administrative headquarters in the city of Lützen and also ceased to exist on January 1, 2011.

Attractions

Church in Nellschütz
  • The church in Zorbau, built around 1000, is possibly the oldest in the Burgenland district. Uda is considered to be the founder of the church.
  • Probably the second oldest surviving organ in the Weißenfelser Land is in the Nellschütz church. It was built in 1723/24. Unfortunately nothing is known about the organ builder Gottfried Joch. The organ is one of the few instruments for which you still need a calculus that treads the bellows and thus provides the air supply. The instrument is not suitable for every piece of organ music because of its limited range (in the manual up to c '' ', in the pedal up to c').
  • In the local cemetery, a grave commemorates a Soviet soldier or (according to other information) civil worker who was abducted to Germany during the Second World War and a victim of forced labor .
  • War memorial at the Friedenseiche restaurant

religion

Church in Gerstewitz

There are three Protestant parishes in the area of Zorbau (Gerstewitz, Nellschütz, Zorbau). These are organized with the communities of Selau, Granschütz and Taucha in the parish of Zorbau, which in turn is assigned to the Protestant parish area Weißenfels Süd-Ost.

Zorbauer Festanger

In 1988 Zorbau celebrated its 900th anniversary. Following on from this, the first Zorbauer Festanger was celebrated in 1989. Since then, the Festanger has taken place continuously at the end of May / beginning of June on the Zorbauer Anger and attracts many visitors from the region.

economy

The industrial area created in Zorbau is one of the economic centers of the Burgenland district and one of the largest commercial and industrial areas in the south of Saxony-Anhalt. Over 1000 jobs have been created on an area of around 100 hectares since 1990. The waste recycling plant and ROBA Corrugated GmbH, which produces fine corrugated cardboard in a factory that is unique in Europe, are known beyond the national borders.

The Zorbau location is in the center of central German traffic flows. The convenient location with a direct connection to the A9 (Berlin-Munich) is ideal, especially as in a southerly direction, after about 30 km, the A9 meets the A4 at Hermsdorfer Kreuz . This provides a motorway connection to Dresden, Poland, the Czech Republic and the western metropolitan areas. In the north you can reach the A14 and Leipzig / Halle Airport as well as the metropolises of Halle and Leipzig. The Rippachtal motorway junction with the A38 was built 4 km to the north and ideally opens up the south of the greater Leipzig area.
