The Catholic parish church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Unterfinning , a district of the municipality of Finning in the Upper Bavarian district of Landsberg am Lech , was built on the site of one or more medieval predecessor buildings from the 15th century and enlarged around 1700. The church, in which valuable pieces of equipment are preserved, is one of the protected architectural monuments in Bavaria.

history

The parish village Unterfinning and a church ("ecclesia") are mentioned in writing for the first time in a document from the former Benedictine monastery Benediktbeuern from the 12th century . Archaeological finds suggest that there were other previous buildings in this church. The choir and the tower were probably rebuilt in the first half of the 15th century, the nave , which was built a little later, was extended around an axis to the west around 1700 . During the interior restoration in 1913, late Gothic wall paintings in the choir were uncovered, which, however, were covered again.

The Unterfinning parish, which was incorporated into the Benediktbeuern monastery until secularization , is now part of the Windach parish community in the Augsburg diocese .

architecture

Exterior construction

In the northern corner of the choir stands the undivided bell tower, which is covered with a high pointed roof and whose corner cuboids are painted. At the height of the bell storey, coupled sound arcades are cut on the north and south sides . The nave, which is covered by a gable roof, is broken through by retracted arched windows, and in the west by round windows. At the end of the 17th century, the two-story sacristy , which has a three-pass window on its upper floor , was added to the southern choir corner , and the two prefixes on the north and south sides of the nave . The choir, which is lower than the nave, is reinforced by stepped buttresses.

inner space

The inner space consists of a nave , in four axes articulated nave and a strongly retracted chorus with five eighths circuit . The choir is vaulted by a needle cap barrel, which was decorated in 1913 with leaf sticks and winged angel heads made of plaster. On the south side of the choir, above the sacristy, there is a small oratorio. The western end of the nave is formed by a gallery supported by a marbled wooden column , which extends almost over two bays .

Coffered ceiling

Around 1700, when it was lengthened to the west, a wooden coffered ceiling with leaf painting was added to the nave . Scenes from the life of Mary are depicted on five medallions . The middle, oval picture is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary , the other pictures show the birth , the temple passage , the Annunciation and the Visitation of Mary. The ceiling was whitewashed white in 1903 and exposed again ten years later.

The ceiling paintings were made by an unknown painter, to whom the large-format apostle pictures above the consecration crosses painted on the nave walls are ascribed. These paintings were also uncovered again in 1913.

Furnishing

Pietà
Right side altar
  • The stage-like high altar in the late Rococo style with its early classicistic vases was made around 1780/90. In its central niche is the Vesper picture , a Gothic pietà from around 1520/30. The Pietà was sold in 1876 and was repurchased in 1913. The Gothic altar hall has been preserved behind the marbled wood paneling .
  • The two two-column side altars were made in the first quarter of the 19th century and are already in the Empire style . The altar leaves on the left altar depict Mary with her parents, St. Anna and St. Joachim , and on the right altar St. Sebastian . On the excerpts are St. Barbara with the chalice and tower in the background and St. Catherine with sword and wheel detect.
  • The late Baroque pulpit dates from around 1730. The colored figures of the four evangelists on the pulpit are the work of the carver Johann Luidl (around 1686–1765), who lives in Landsberg am Lech . On the oil painting on the back wall of the pulpit, Saint Joseph is shown with the baby Jesus.
