TNA Impact! (video game)
TNA Impact! (official typeset "TNA iMPACT!") will be the first video game released by the professional wrestling promotion, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). The video game will be based on TNA, and is named after it's flagship program, Impact!. Production of the video game was announced in March 2006, respectively, for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360 consoles by Midway Games.[3] The game is being developed by Midway Studios in Los Angeles, and will be published by Midway Games on September 9, 2008.
Production
After periods of negotiation with Electronic Arts[4] and Rockstar Games,[5] TNA signed a multi-year agreement with Midway Games on November 7 2005 to create games for consoles, PCs, and handhelds.[6] Midway announced their intentions to release Impact!, the first game in TNA's history, for each of the seventh generation consoles on March 2, 2006.
TNA wrestlers have been involved with the games production. The self described "hardcore gamers" Samoa Joe and A.J. Styles have both taken part in meetings with Midway staff to brainstorm game-play ideas,[7] and Joe, Styles, Christopher Daniels, Senshi, Sonjay Dutt, and Jeff Jarrett[7] were all a part of the motion capture sessions.[8] During the October 23 2006 tapings of the weekly TNA Impact! program, members of the TNA roster were "scanned" for the game and audio samples of the Impact! Zone crowd were recorded.[9]
On July 16 2008, IGN posted a new cover for the TNA iMPACT! video game however it is unconfirmed which shall be used in September.
Features
TNA Impact! is to be geared towards a quick-paced, high-impact style of play, with less emphasis on submission maneuvers. It will support up to four players at once on a console,[10] with online support—which includes tournaments[8]—currently standing at one-on-one.[11] Online play is, however, limited to the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions.[12] It's planned to feature straightforward, intuitive controls, with "accurate" and "detailed" character models.[13] Scans of the actual wrestlers were used for the game in place of hand-painted textures to include small details, such as skin texture and specific scars.[14] Due to memory limitations, the Wii and Playstation 2 versions will not have the create-a-wrestler mode.[12]
Finishers are accessed by building up the "Impact! meter" displayed on the screen. In the same area a color-coded damage indicator shows the condition of characters. The game also features mini-games for escaping pin attempts and submission holds.[13]
TNA's signature Full Metal Mayhem,[15] Monster's Ball,[16] Ultimate X,[10] and King of the Mountain will be playable match types; alongside the more standard Singles, Tag team and Fatal Four-Way matches.[8] Submission, Falls Count Anywhere.[16] There will not, however, be a Six Sides of Steel match.[15][12] Eight different venues[17]—including TNA's main home; the Florida Impact! Zone,[10] and arenas set in Japan,[10] Mexico,[10] England,[10], Las Vegas,[10] and locations designed to evoke the independent circuit feel[17]—will be available to house matches, with the Impact! Zone having an increased ringside area for play and hot spots for player interaction.[13][14]
It was announced during TNA's UK tour by Jeremy Borash that the Liverpool Olympia will be a playable arena in the game.
At least one match has been filmed to be exclusively featured in the game.[18]
Announced on IGN.com, that they are currently having a countdown of wrestlers and entrances called "TNA Listers".
Starting the week beginning July 28 2008, TNAwrestling.com began exclusively revealing a superstar for the game's roster, that had previously not been revealed. The first week saw Shark Boy revealed and the second saw Kevin Nash added to the game's confirmed roster, wearing a purple polo shirt and jeans.
Roster
The confirmed roster so far as featured on the TNA Impact! official site, IGN and TNA's official site is as follows:
Story Mode's main character is a fictional wrestler named Suicide. Also, Christy Hemme will be featured in the game, but she will not be a playable character. On the 2nd episode of "TNA on IGN", Jeremy Borash & AJ Styles revealed that Afro Thunder from Midway's "Ready 2 Rumble Boxing" series will appear in the game as a hidden character. Also, anyone who pre-orders the game from Amazon.com will get a code to unlock Mike Tenay. Downloadable ContentIt was announced on June 17,2008, that downloadable content would include additional wrestlers. It was announced on July 15, 2008, that downloadable content will include different matches and venues. Online PromotionTNA Impact is supported by an online promotion called "Anger Angle" featuring Kurt Angle. Users are provoked into attacking the popular wrestler with a 2" x 4" piece of wood. After a specified amount of time Angle will get so angry that he will charge the screen and supposedly smash the glass. This reveals a trailer of the game featuring gameplay footage. Story modeYour superstar used to be a fan favorite and a former great champion named SUICIDE who one night got attacked from behind tossed into a river and "left for dead". Then you "recreate" your identity by creating your wrestler. Then you start as a new guy in mexico. And after training in a couple of different places, you're in a tournament where if you win two matches and then beat Black Machismo Jay Lethal Jim Cornette then gives you a shot of getting back on TNA iMPACT! Since PS2 and Wii dont have any confermation of CAW Mode yet, it is rumored that you select from a corps of Pre Made CAWs instead of making your own. References
