The UEFA Champions League 2006-07 is the 52nd edition of the European championship football club tournament and 15th edition under the current UEFA Champions League format. The final is scheduled to be played at Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece on 23 May 2007.

Serie A scandal

The Italian qualifiers should have been, according to the results of the Serie A 2005-06, Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Fiorentina. After the match-fixing scandal, the four teams were decided on July 25.

Inter and Roma were confirmed as the direct entrants to the group stage. Chievo and AC Milan were confirmed as the entrants into the third qualifying round. Originally, AC Milan were barred from the Champions League, but were restored to the competition on appeal, although they had to survive a third-round tie instead of directly entering the group stage. AC Milan were given the go-ahead to take part in this season's Champions League and beat Red Star Belgrade in the UEFA Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round by an aggregate of 3-1. [1]

Suspension of Hellenic Football Federation

The participation of Greek teams in this year's tournament was in doubt following FIFA's suspension of the Hellenic Football Federation from all international competition because of government interference in the running of the sport in Greece.[2] However, FIFA lifted its ban on 12 July 2006 after Greece amended a new sports law to address FIFA's objections.[3]

The teams eliminated in this round proceed to the first round of the UEFA Cup.

1This club qualified for this season's UEFA competitions as a member of the Football Association of Serbia and Montenegro during the 2005-06 season but is currently a member of the Football Association of Serbia which is the official successor of the previous football association.[4]

2Due to the armed conflict going on in Israel, UEFA decided that no European matches could be staged in the country until further notice.[5]. The match was played at Lobanovsky Dynamo Stadium in Kiev, Ukraine.[6].

Group stage

The draw for this round was held August 24, 2006 in Monaco. The matches will be played September 12-December 6, 2006.

Tie-breaking criteria

Based on paragraph 4.05 in the UEFA regulations for the current season, if two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:

  1. higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question;
  2. superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question;
  3. higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question;
  4. superior goal difference from all group matches played;
  5. higher number of goals scored in all group matches played;
  6. higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question, as well as its association, over the previous five seasons.

Teams that clinched a spot in the Round of 16 are indicated in bold type.

Teams that clinched a spot in the UEFA Cup are indicated in bold italics.

Teams eliminated from Europe are indicated in plain italics.

December 5, 2006
Barcelona 20:45 Bremen
Chelsea 20:45 Levski

Notes:

  • Chelsea need only a point from their two remaining matches to qualify for the knockout stage. They will also advance if Barcelona fail to win either of their remaining matches. (Two Barça wins, plus only a draw and a loss by Chelsea, will leave the clubs level on 11 points, but Chelsea hold the tiebreaker with a win and a draw from their head-to-head matches.) A Chelsea win or draw at Werder Bremen on November 22 will clinch top spot in the group.
  • Levski Sofia have been eliminated from first and second place, but may still qualify for the UEFA Cup in third place. However, they must defeat both Barça and Chelsea, and have Barça lose to Werder. (Levski could theoretically still advance with two wins and a Barça draw with Werder, but Barça's 5-0 win over Levski on 12 September gives them a huge edge in a possible tiebreaker. In this case, they have to beat Barça by 6 goals to overcome the aggregate score.)

December 5, 2006
Bayern 20:45 Internazionale
Sporting 20:45 Spartak Moskva

Notes:

  • Bayern Munich have qualified for the knockout stages.
  • For Inter, a draw with Sporting on 22 November will assure themselves of no worse than a UEFA Cup place, and a win will put them in the knockout stages.
  • Spartak Moscow have been eliminated from first and second place, but may still qualify for the UEFA Cup in third place. However, they must win both their remaining games against Bayern and Sporting to have a chance of doing so. Even if they do, they will be eliminated from UEFA Cup contention if Sporting defeat Inter on 22 November (making it impossible for Spartak to catch Sporting on points) and Inter win or draw at Bayern on 5 December (a draw would leave Inter and Spartak level on points, but Inter hold the tiebreaker with a head-to-head sweep).

Notes:

  • Liverpool and PSV Eindhoven have qualified for the knockout stages. Galatasaray and Bordeaux are left to fight for third place to qualify for the UEFA Cup.
  • If the Liverpool-PSV match on November 22 produces a winner, the winner will secure first place, as they would then have the advantage in a possible tiebreaker with a head-to-head win and draw.
  • If the Bordeaux-Galatasaray match on November 22 produces a winner, that club will secure third place. Even if the two clubs finish level on points, the winner of this match will hold the tiebreaker with a head-to-head win and draw.

Roma 20:45 Valencia

Notes:

  • Valencia have qualified for the knockout stages.
  • Roma have secured no worse than a UEFA Cup spot. They cannot be passed by both Olympiacos and Shakhtar, since those two clubs must play one another on 5 December. A Roma win or draw at Shakhtar on 22 November will send them to the knockout stage. In case of a draw, Olympiacos are the only club that can catch them on points, but Roma hold the tiebreaker with a better head-to-head record (a win and a draw).

Notes:

  • Lyon and Real Madrid have qualified for the knockout stages (Real Madrid cannot be outranked by Steaua Bucharest due to their superior head-to-head record).
  • If Steaua Bucharest wins or draws against Dinamo Kiev, they will secure third place, as if Steaua wins Dinamo will be unable to catch up in points, and if Steaua draws they will hold the tiebreaker based on a superior head-to-head record (1 win and 1 draw) against Dinamo should they lose and Dinamo win on the last matchday.
