"Give It 2 Me"
Song

"Give It 2 Me" is the second single by American singer-songwriter Madonna from her eleventh studio album, Hard Candy.[1] It was released in mid 2008 by Warner Bros. Records, and the video features American singer-songwriter Pharrell Williams, who co-wrote and co-produced the song.[2]

Critical reception

USA Today's Elysa Gardner called the song "thumping" and "breathless", naming it one of the standout tracks of the album.[3] Rolling Stone described "Give It 2 Me" as a "thumpy self-empowerment anthem".[4] About.com listed it as one of the top tracks on Hard Candy.[5] Bloomberg complimented it on its "insidious beats".[6] Slant Magazine called it "a little careerism on the dance floor".

Chart performance

In the absence of a physical single release, "Give It 2 Me" entered the UK Singles Chart at number seventy-three on May 4, 2008, and climbed to number sixty.[7] On June 15, it re-entered the UK Singles Chart at number thirty-six, and has so far peaked only at number 7 [8].

In the U.S., before its official release, it debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at number fifty-seven, the highest debut of the week. It has already topped the Billboard Hot Dance Airplay chart. Madonna extended her streak of having the most consecutive number ones on this chart to six and made history by reaching the top spot in three weeks. It is also rapidly moving up the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart and currently sits at number 7.

Before it was officially released in Canada, it debuted at number eight and became the week's highest debut. Currently it sits at number 32 jumping from 41 of last week and is rapidly moving up the charts again.

In Norway, the track reached number sixteen on the singles chart on downloads alone, before an official single release. On the 20th of June it reached number six in the Italian singles chart on downloads alone and has since peaked at number four. [9]

"Give It 2 Me" has more than 369,000 points to date, reaching number 17 on the United World Chart so far in its fourth non-consecutive week in the chart. In the Netherlands the single rises to number one in its fourth week on July 18.

Music video

The music video was filmed on April 3, 2008 in London, co-directed by fashion photographer Tom Munro and Nathan Rissman. Pharrell's part of the video was used during the performances of "Give It 2 Me" on the Hard Candy promotional tour. The full video was leaked on the video-sharing website YouTube on May 31, but was later removed by Warner Bros. The video was officially released on Yahoo!, AOL and iTunes stores worldwide on June 4, and premiered on Channel 4 in the UK on June 5. A teaser for the video was released on June 6.[10] It premiered on MTV's TRL in the U.S. on June 10. The video features Madonna and Pharrell singing in various backdrops while singing to the camera.
