Çanakkale ([ tʃaˈnakːaˌle ], Ottoman چینک قلعه 'Pot Fortress' , formerly German Tschanak Kale ) is a Turkish city in the geographical region of Marmara . It is the capital of the province of the same name and the seat of the central district ( Merkez ). The city is the largest in the province and comprises about three quarters of the county's population. The district in turn is home to about a third of the provincial population.
etymology
The city's name refers to a type of earthenware (çanak) that was made here and sold in the Ottoman Empire and abroad. Numerous specimens can be seen in the Archaeological Museum. The second part of the city name is the Turkish word kale for German fortress .
geography
The central district of Çanakkale is located in the north-west of the province. It is bordered by Lapseki County to the north, Çan County to the east and Bayramiç and Ezine counties to the west . In the north and northwest, the Dardanelles form the natural border.
district
The central administrative district has the highest population density in the province, roughly three times the provincial average (2018: 55 - 178 inh. Per km²). In addition to Çanakkale, the district consists of another municipality ( Belediye ): Kepez with 2,834 inhabitants and 52 villages ( Köy ) with an average population of 323 inhabitants. Five of the villages have more than a thousand inhabitants: Erenköy (1,479), Güzelyalı (1,465), Işıklar (1,451), Çınarlı (1,275) and Kumkale (1,100 inhabitants).

history
The city was founded in Ottoman times as a successor to ancient Abydos . Its strategic importance results from its location at the entrance to the Dardanelles . Nearby is the Truva Historical National Park with Hisarlik (site of the castle, site of historical Troy).
Çanakkale is the location of the Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart Üniversitesi ( University March 18 ). It keeps the private library of the Troy excavator Manfred Korfmann , which he bequeathed to the Turkish Troy Foundation , in a building specially provided for this purpose . The finds from Troy and other parts of the Troad are exhibited in the Çanakkale Archaeological Museum .
The Turkish Navy operates a base in Çanakkale .

Since 2004, Çanakkale twin town of Osnabrück. A pedestrian bridge in Osnabrück has been named after the city of Çanakkale. Osnabrück's Manneken Pis, the Fountain of Wishes, is also located on this bridge .
