After two seasons at Reggina, in which Barreto made the leap to high achievers, he was signed by Atalanta Bergamo in July 2009 . After he played four league games for Atalanta until the end of October 2009, he suffered a foot injury on October 28, 2009 in the away game against Livorno. As a result, he was out for around four months. Even after relegation to the Serie B at the end of the 2009/10 season, he remained true to Atalanta and managed with his team immediate resurgence . He then moved to league rivals US Palermo , with whom he also managed to return to Serie A immediately after relegation.
