5 is Lenny Kravitz's fifth studio album . For the hit Fly Away and his cover of the song American Woman , originally from The Guess Who , Kravitz won the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance .

To the formation

In the production of the album Kravitz worked with synthesizers and loops , which should give the album a more modern sound. Musically, however, the pieces were more inspired by the 1970s and combined funk elements with Kravitz's rock style. The song American Woman was also used as the soundtrack for the film Austin Powers - Spy in a secret missionary position .

success

The album reached number 28 on the Billboard 200 , number six in the German charts, number one in Austria and number three in Switzerland. Allmusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote that the album contained some passable pieces but fell short of the melodies that made his first three records so enjoyable.

In the Austrian charts the album stayed at number 1 for one week and 48 weeks in the charts and was awarded gold.
