European Academy of Sciences and Arts
The European Academy of Sciences and Arts is a transnational and interdisciplinary network that connects around 2,000 renowned scientists, artists and clergy worldwide. It was founded in 1990 and is based in Salzburg .
history
The origins go back to a scientific working group to which the Salzburg heart surgeon Felix Unger , the Viennese archbishop Franz König and the political scientist and philosopher Nikolaus Lobkowicz belonged. The official founding took place on March 7, 1990 in Salzburg, where the academy is still located today.
The plenary meeting of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, in which the new members are solemnly accepted, takes place annually on the first weekend in March in Salzburg. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the organization, the celebrations took place on March 7, 2015 in the presence of the Federal President a. D. Heinz Fischer as well as the President of Macedonia ( Gjorge Ivanov ) and the former President of Serbia ( Tomislav Nikolić ). Furthermore, King Philippe of Belgium , Borut Pahor (President of Slovenia), Gjorge Ivanov (President of Macedonia) and, since June 12, 2018, the Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen are among the protectors (national patrons) of the Academy. Their former protectors include a. the former Commission President and Prime Minister of Luxembourg Jacques Santer , the former King of Spain Juan Carlos I and the former Commission and Prime Minister Romano Prodi .
Self-image and membership
The European Academy of Sciences and Arts is politically independent and financed through donations, private sponsors and public bodies. Your activity is not aimed at financial gain. It sees itself as a scholarly forum that takes up interdisciplinary and transnational socially relevant topics. It had around 2,000 members worldwide in 2018. These are recognized scientists, artists and clergy, including 32 Nobel Prize winners. Membership can be acquired at the invitation of the Academy or through suggestions from its members. On the basis of the recommendations of the nomination committee, the Senate decides on the admission of a new member. Membership is regarded as an award for services to science and society.
Well-known members of the academy include a. the economist Hans-Werner Sinn , Michail Gorbatschow (Nobel Peace Prize), the artist Jenny Holzer and Pope em. Benedict XVI .
organization
The academy is a non-profit association under Austrian association law. The current president of the academy is Felix Unger , honorary president is Nikolaus Lobkowicz . The vice-presidents are Brigitte Tag , Michał Kleiber and Štefan Luby.
The members of the academy come from 73 countries and are divided into eight classes:
- Class I: Humanities - Dean: Helmut Reinalter

- Class III: Arts - Dean: Peter Weibel
- Class IV: Natural Sciences - Dean: Klaus Mainzer
- Class V: Social, legal and economic sciences - Dean: Kurt Schmoller
- Class VI: Technology and environmental sciences - Dean: Hans Sünkel
- Class VII: World Religions - Dean: Elmar Kuhn
- Class VIII: Corporate and Public Governance - Dean: Stefan Schepers

Tolerance price
Since 1997, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts has awarded the Tolerance Prize, which recognizes commitment to humanity and tolerance. Guided by the goals of the Charter of Tolerance, this prize is awarded to personalities or institutions who are actively committed to tolerance and humanity as well as to cross-border dialogue and against racism.

Tolerance rings
Since 2012, the Academy has been awarding tolerance rings based on Lessing's ring parable to representatives of the three Abrahamic religions for the promotion of justice and tolerance between Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The previous winners are:
