Friedrich Wilhelm Nikolaus Alfred von Besser (born March 9, 1854 in Potsdam , † May 16, 1919 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

He was the son of the future Prussian Colonel Eduard Theodor Rudolf von Besser (1811-1885) and his wife, born von Dreyse. His grandfather was the Prussian major general Adolf Friedrich von Besser (1777–1836).

Military career

Better occurred during the war against France on August 1, 1870 as a cadet in the Guards Rifles Battalion of the Prussian army one. With the battalion he took part in the siege of Paris and the storming of Le Bourget . His achievements were recognized by the award of the Iron Cross Second Class and on January 5, 1871, he was promoted to Second Lieutenant . From October 1, 1876 to July 21, 1879, Besser graduated from the War Academy , the following year he was first lieutenant and in 1881/82 repeatedly commanded to serve with Prince George of Prussia . On September 1, 1886, he was promoted to captain and company commander , until he was finally transferred as adjutant to the 4th Division in Bromberg on September 14, 1893 and promoted to major on January 27, 1894 . As such, he was transferred to the 3rd Guards Regiment on foot on February 15, 1896 , where Besser was given command of the IV Battalion. From November 7, 1896 to June 14, 1898 he was commander of the 1st Battalion. Then Besser was appointed commander of the Guard Jäger battalion and in this position was promoted to lieutenant colonel on August 18, 1900 . On October 28, 1902, he was assigned to lead the Leibgarde Infantry Regiment (1st Grand Ducal Hessian) No. 115 . With the promotion to Colonel , Besser was appointed regimental commander in Darmstadt on January 27, 1903 . From March 22, 1907, he led the 42nd Infantry Brigade in Frankfurt am Main , until Besser was promoted to major general on April 14, 1907, and became the commander of this large unit . Under awarding of the character as Lieutenant General he was placed on March 22, 1910, the statutory pension for disposition .

Reused as a ZD officer at the beginning of the First World War , Besser received the patent for his rank and was appointed commander of the 47th Reserve Division on November 11, 1914 . At first he was still fighting with his large association between the Meuse and the Moselle . From November 20, 1914, the division moved to Cracow and from December 5 intervened in the fighting for Limanowa - Lapanow . This was followed by Trench warfare at lower Dunajek. For the success of his division in the battle of Gorlice-Tarnów , Besser was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords. This was followed by further fighting on the Eastern Front until Besser surrendered the division in April 1917 and took over command of the 3rd Landwehr Division . He led them beyond the ceasefire and ceasefire on the Eastern Front and participated in the occupation of Ukraine . On September 23, 1918, Besser became commander of the 205th Infantry Division , with which he participated in the occupation of Livonia and Estonia . After the Armistice of Compiègne and the evacuation of the territories, Besser was released from his command on December 18, 1918 and retired.
