Alois
Alois (also Aloys , Aloisius , Aloysius ) is a male given name . In Germany, it is mainly used in southern Germany. The feminine version of the name is Aloisia .
Origin and meaning of the name
Sometimes the name is explained as Alwis , "very wise", but this derivation is "unproven". In fact, it is a variant of Aloysius, a Latinized form of a Provencal variant of Ludwig . Saint Aloisius von Gonzaga was born as Ludovico, he was called Luigi or Alvise.
Another evidence may be the accord between the Orsini, Vitelli and Cesare Borgia of October 29, 1502: Louis XII. of France is referred to as Aluisi . The king himself signed in other sources of the time than Loys , but is usually referred to as Luigi by contemporary Italians . The intervowel g , particularly in older Italian, corresponds in turn to an intervowel s in other Romance varieties, so it again suggests Aloy s ius from Lui g i (for comparison see parti g iano and Parti s an , parmi g iano and Parmesan, etc. .) However, it is precisely the intervowel g that is considered Provencalism in Italian.
