Altmanns is a place and at the same time a cadastral municipality of the municipality of Heidenreichstein in the district of Gmünd in the northwestern Waldviertel in Lower Austria . The village is a row village with forest hooves .

The Altmann cadastral area borders on the cadastral communities of the Heidenreichsteiner urban area as follows: Eberweis in the north, Thaures in the west and Heidenreichstein and Kleinpertholz in the east .

In the south Altmanns borders on the cadastral communities of Kiensaß in the municipality of Schrems and Aalfang in the municipality of Amaliendorf-Aalfang and in the northwest a short distance on the cadastral community of Gopprechts in the municipality of Litschau .

The Braunaubach flows through the village of Altmanns , which was regulated in 1909 and comes from Eisgarn via the cadastral municipality of Eberweis to Altmanns and then reaches the neighboring village of Amaliendorf .

history

The place name is derived from the Old High German personal name "Altmann".

Altmanns was first mentioned in a document in 1369, became a cadastral municipality in 1784 and constituted itself in 1850 as a separate political municipality with 342 inhabitants at the time. In 1934 Altmanns had 397 inhabitants and in 1939 364 inhabitants. In 2001 there were still 232 people living in the village.

A local chapel has existed since 1836. In 1877 the school chronicle of the school, which existed until 1966, begins. 1900 is the founding year of the Altmann volunteer fire brigade . In 1925 the electrification of the place was started by the Hoheneich electricity company HEWEG. In 1951 a community hall with a fire department depot was built.

On January 1, 1972, the municipality was amalgamated with the municipality of Heidenreichstein, whereby the municipal council had spoken out against this measure by the Lower Austrian provincial government at the end of 1970.

Geyersteine

In Altmanns there is a group of rocks declared a natural monument, which is called the Franz Geyer Memorial or Geyerstein after the composer Franz Geyer who died in 1965 .

Bruneiteich

The Bruneiteich is one of the largest fish ponds in the Waldviertel and is located in the Bruneiteich nature reserve , which has existed since 1979 , which is part of the flora-fauna-habitat area Waldviertler pond, heather and moor landscape as well as the bird sanctuary Waldviertel and the Ramsar area Waldviertler pond, moorland and river landscape is.

The pond, which was created around the beginning of the 16th century, has an area of ​​38.52 hectares, but has a significantly smaller water surface due to the siltation. A special feature of the pond is the existence of two dams and two drainage devices (tap houses), so that one speaks of the large and small Bruneitich. The pond has a water depth of 0.6 to 1 meter. Both parts of the pond drain into the Braunaubach. The water is used as a carp or wax pond and as fishing water. In addition to carp, vendace and young pikeperch are raised. Beneath the large Bruneiteich there are barrows not far from the drainage ditch, which have not yet been explored.
