America's Sweethearts (English for "America's Darlings") is an American comedy film from 2001 .

action

The film producer Lee Phillips needs living in separation spouses Eddie Thomas and Gwen Harrison bring together the premiere of a new movie. Both are well-known stars of Hollywood , but only popular with the audience as a couple. While Gwen has a Latino lover, Eddie remains in a mental hospital after the breakup and breakdown .

To make matters worse, the eccentric director and three-time Oscar winner Hal Weidmann refuses to show the film to the press any earlier than during the official screening. So that the disappointed press people cannot leave the premiere prematurely, Lee Phillips is organizing the screening in a remote hotel in Nevada .

Before the premiere, it becomes increasingly clear to Eddie that he has overlooked numerous character weaknesses of Gwen because he wanted to see her for real life as she is in her film roles. At the same time, he feels increasingly drawn to Gwen's sister and assistant Kiki. The final screening gets out of hand. Weidmann filmed the actors and other employees privately without their knowledge without a script and edited everything accordingly in order to redefine the authenticity of his works. At the press conference, Eddie reveals his feelings towards both Gwen and Kiki. Gwen dismisses Kiki as an assistant and, contrary to expectations, experiences another career boost. She hugs her sister, Eddie and Kiki kiss in front of the reporters.

production

Emergence

Julia Roberts was originally intended for the role of Gwen Harrison, but she chose what she thought was the more diverse role of Kiki. Robert Downey Jr. , who was supposed to play the role of Hector, was arrested on suspicion of drug possession shortly before filming began on January 10, 2001 .

costs

Production costs amounted to about 46 million US dollars . The film grossed approximately $ 138 million worldwide.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film themed the lives of Hollywood dream couples like Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid or Demi Moore and Bruce Willis. Top-class actors like Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta-Jones, John Cusack and Billy Crystal would act like a closed ensemble here; even supporting roles would be filled with first-class character actors ("A-list character actors") such as Christopher Walken and Stanley Tucci. Berardinelli praised the "sharp" dialogues as well as the direction and wrote that the film was the best comedy of the summer of 2001.

synchronization

The German synchronization was created by Hermes Synchron based on a dialogue book by Thomas Danneberg , who also directed the dialogue .

Awards

James Newton Howard won the 2002 Film and Television Music Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers .
