Amphoe Pak Phanang ( Thai : อำเภอ ปากพนัง ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district) in the south of the province of Nakhon Si Thammarat . The province of Nakhon Si Thammarat is located in the southern region of Thailand , about 780 km south of Bangkok on the east coast of the Malay Peninsula to the Gulf of Thailand .
etymology
The name Pak Phanag means "Protected Estuary". This refers to the mouth of the Maenam Pak Phanang ( Pak Phanang River , แม่น้ำ ปากพนัง ), which is protected from the open sea by a long peninsula.
geography
Neighboring districts (clockwise from south): the Amphoe Hua Sai , Chian Yai , Chaloem Phra Kiat and Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat . All Amphoe are in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. To the east lies the Gulf of Thailand .
A geographical peculiarity is the long, narrow Talumphuk peninsula ( แหลม ตะลุมพุก ), which was formed by sediments from the predominantly northern current in the Gulf of Thailand in connection with the runoff of the water from the Pak Phanang River. The shallow bay bounded by the peninsula is about three kilometers wide at the mouth of the river and ten kilometers wide at the end of the peninsula. The coast of the bay originally consisted of the Wadden Sea and mangrove forests . Today, however, much of the original landscape has been converted into shrimp farms .
history
During the Thesaphiban administrative reform in 1895, a district called Bia Sad ( เบิ้ ย ซัด ) was created. On March 22, 1903, it was renamed Pak Phang. This name was mentioned for this area as early as 1665.
On October 25, 1962, the tropical storm Harriet reached the district. The flat Talumphuk peninsula was completely devastated by the storm and the city of Pak Phanang was inundated. The water was up to four meters high, which cost around 1,000 lives. King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) immediately called for a public fundraising campaign. From the three million baht that remained after the first direct aid, a foundation, the “Rajaprajanugroh Foundation”, was established.
