Andrew Burnham (born January 7, 1970 in Liverpool ) is a British politician and Mayor of Greater Manchester . Previously, he was Labor Secretary of Health from June 2009 to May 2010 in Gordon Brown's cabinet .

Life

After graduating from St Catherine's School in Culcheth , Andrew Burnham attended St Aeldred High School in Newton-le-Willows . He then studied English at Fitzwilliam College , Cambridge and achieved a master's degree . At the age of 14 Burnham joined the Labor Party during the miners' strike . Since 2001 he has been a Labor Party MP for the Leigh constituency in the British House of Commons . In June 2007 he was appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury ; a position he held until 2008.

Since September 2015, Burnham has been the Shadow Home Secretary in the shadow cabinet of the new Labor Party leader Jeremy Corbyn . Burnham was one of the candidates for the election of the new party chairman. In September 2016, Burnham announced his resignation from the shadow cabinet. On May 4, 2017, he was elected Mayor of Greater Manchester with 63% of the vote. Burnham will not run in the early general election 2017 .

Burnham married Marie-France van Heel in 2000. The couple has a son.
