Annie's kiosk is a Danish food stand on Fjordvejen in the village of Sønderhav ( German:  Süderhaff ) not far from Flensburg in the Aabenraa municipality .

location

View - from the bank across the street from the kiosk, its first location - of the Ox Islands and the Flensburg Fjord

The kiosk is only a few kilometers away from the German-Danish border and offers seating only outdoors, but with a view of the Flensburg Fjord with the two ox islands in the immediate vicinity and on the opposite side of the German fjord, the Glücksburg lido , which is what makes it a favorite summer destination. Many guests take advantage of the exposed location directly on the fjord to arrive by their own boat - possible through a nearby jetty where the small ferry to the opposite Great Ox Island ( Store Okseø in Danish ) left (out of service since 2015).

public perception

The sales stand, a sight in the German-Danish border region, is known nationwide for its Danish hot dogs , around 1000 of which are sold here every day. It is considered to be the “most famous hot dog in southern Denmark” and has been the focus of reports on television and the national press several times. By May 2008 alone, at least twelve German television teams were interested in the “inconspicuous little yellow booth” ( taz ), which in the same year was still listed as an “ insider tip” in the Marco Polo travel guide .

Because of its popularity, the locals also call the small town of Sønderhav Hotdoghav (other spellings: Hot-Dog-Hav or Hotdog Hav ). The officer candidates of the Naval School Mürwik , who once a year organized a "hot dog race" with their sailing boats from the marina of the naval school to the kiosk, nicknamed their sailing destination Hot-Dog-Havn (German: Hot-Dog-Hafen ; others Spelling: Hot Dog Havn ).

history

Career path

The kiosk was named and owned by Annie Bøgild, who started selling hot dogs there in 1966 - at that time as a 15-year-old temporary worker who had to make do with an initial monthly salary of 450 Dkr (today around 60 euros). Her predecessor Reinhardt Petersen had the idea of running a kiosk on Fjordvejen as early as 1936. At that time, the forest worker promised himself a profitable business with the newly completed country road and opened his sausage car (Pølsevogn) near the shore right by the steamboat bridge . The stand was the first kiosk in Sønderhav and had sales hatches on two sides: one on the waterfront for guests arriving by steamboat and one on the land side for customers arriving by land. In 1945 the kiosk finally moved to its current location on the other side of the street, where there was enough space for parking spaces. Petersen made Annie Bøgild a co-owner in 1974 and worked in the business until he died in 1985. Shortly before his death, Bøgild took over the business in 1984, but later reduced her working hours, which in her early years were up to 14 hours a day, seven days a week.

Biker meeting

Since the 1970s, when a motorcycle club discovered Annie's kiosk as a domicile for its tours, the kiosk has been used by numerous motorcyclists, in addition to motorists and cyclists, who come from Jutland , Funen and almost all of northern Germany. In the summer half of the year - traditionally especially on Tuesdays - there are 200 to 600 bikers among the customers. On some summer evenings, up to 500 motorcycles are lined up in the parking lot at the same time, and at the end of June 2012 a representative of the Aabenraa municipality recorded in a protocol that there were 1000 bikers in Sønderhav that Tuesday. Thanks to them, the kiosk has a regular customer base, which is considered the largest of all sausage stands in Denmark. For the crowd of trailers, this also means that the available parking spaces are sometimes (s) insufficient and that many drivers use the lane during the search for a parking space on site . In addition, the residents are occasionally annoyed by the noise of the engine, and according to the police, unsuccessful motorcycle stunts , which have already led to accidents, cause a stir . The police and the local authority were or are negotiating with the bikers, represented by the Honda VT600C vehicle owner Jette Kristiansen, known in the community as Mai-Ling , specifically to resolve the conflict .

Another special feature was the held for the riders motorcycle service in August 2006, the year of the 40th anniversary of service Bøgild, she with garlands beschmücktem sidecar , party tent and brass band celebrated; in addition, their employees ordered a shanty choir at the time.

Danish Hot Dog Championships 2010

The widespread assumption that there are the “best hot dogs in Denmark” could not be confirmed at least at the second Danish Hot Dog Championships (DM i hotdog) in August 2010. At the championships held in Copenhagen's Tivoli amusement park , in which Annie Bøgild took part for the first time, she finished fifth out of 13 participants - behind the winning chef Paul Cunningham, whose restaurant The Paul , which was then rated with one star in the Michelin Guide, is located in Tivoli . Previously, the British bookmaker Ladbrokes had placed the uncrowned “Hot Dog Queen from Sønderjylland ” ( JydskeVestkysten , Århus Stiftstidende ) in fourth place. When preparing the hot dogs, she largely dispenses with ready-made products and uses fresh ingredients from local bakers and butchers, such as the red glowing Røde pølser . She even sources ketchup and tartar sauce from a nearby salad factory in Gråsten . Although she earns a little less apiece this way, she suspected that this was her company's recipe for success.

Robbery 2010

Also in August 2010, in the absence of the owner, an armed robbery in which a man stole the daily turnover had a mild outcome. The fleeing robber was three hours later 150 meters away, sleeping in the car and picked up with the loot by the Danish police. It was the first robbery to date in 44 years that happened at the kiosk in Bøgild's time, which prompted her to set up a video camera.

Sausage War 2014

Fjordens Perle , the competitor to Annie's kiosk, opened in 2014. The newspapers then spoke of the “sausage war”.

In 2014, a new food truck called Fjordens Perle (Pearl of the Fjord) was added 50 meters away , operated by two former students Simon Skjøth Kolmos and Søren Jessen, who had already gained practical experience in the food industry as a temporary worker at Annie Bøgild and she is now among others with home-made burgers - meatballs competes. “According to the motto competition invigorates business” ( Der Nordschleswiger ) , the two Danes use the awareness of Annie's kiosk for their business idea. However, you do not intend to wage a price war with the hot dog stall that Angela Merkel has already visited or to force it off the market. Nevertheless, the headlines of Flensborg Avis and Flensburger Tageblatt then announced the "sausage war" (Danish: "Pølsekrig").

Annie Bøgild died in 2016

In the summer of 2015, Annie Bøgild came to work less and less because she was caring for her husband, who had cancer. After his death she worked in the kiosk for two weeks until she developed bladder cancer herself . Annie Bøgild died on October 25, 2016 at the age of 66. Her funeral took place three days later in Holbøl Kirke in Holbøl , where more than two dozen motorcyclists from Germany and Denmark attended the memorial service. Her employees immediately fulfilled her wish that the kiosk would continue to operate normally after her death. A Danish Facebook group (Annies Kiosk / Pølsevogn - Bevar den) with over 840 members (as of December 2016) has meanwhile started to campaign for the preservation of the small hot dog company.

Persistence after Annie's death

After Annie Bøgild's death, the lease with the municipality of Aabenraa for the exquisite area was no longer valid. The future of the hot dog stand remained uncertain, as the municipality of Aabenraa indicated that it would no longer be interested in extending the lease due to the chaotic traffic on Fjordvejen. After the tender for the parking areas and the snack bar in Sønderhav, negotiations with one bidder got stuck. According to the tender, structural measures would have to be carried out, in particular to comply with the provisions of the Coastal Protection Ordinance.

The new tenant identified himself at the end of June 2017. Jens Enemark, operator of the golf course and hotel restaurant “Benniksgaard” near Gravenstein and founder of the Padborg Park motorsport racing track , will take over the lease on July 1, 2017. In consultation with the coastal authority (Kystdirektoratet), a small expansion of the kiosk is planned in order to meet work regulations can. Otherwise, the new tenant guaranteed to continue operations in the same way and to keep the name Annie's kiosk .

Annie's kiosk in the new building June 2018

In January 2018 the original kiosk was demolished. On April 13, 2018, Jens Enemark opened the larger new snack bar built in northern Denmark for 300,000 euros in the same location under the old name of Annie's kiosk with the old workforce.
