Anton Joseph (Josef) Binterim (born September 19, 1779 in Düsseldorf ; † May 17, 1855 in Düsseldorf- Bilk ) was a Roman Catholic priest , Franciscan , theologian and church historian as well as a member of the Prussian National Assembly .

Life

Anton Joseph Binterim, son of the Düsseldorf master tailor Johann Peter Binterim, joined the order of the Franciscans in the Cologne Order Province in 1796 and received the order name Flosculus . He studied philosophy and physics in the Franciscan monastery Bethanien in Düren and theology in Aachen . In 1802 he received in Cologne-Deutz , the ordination by the Cologne Auxiliary Bishop Clemens August von Merle ; In 1804 he left the order because of the secularization of the monasteries, but saw himself as closely associated with the Franciscan order throughout his life.

In 1821 he received his doctorate in theology from the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . In 1848 he became a member of the University of Prague. In 1852 he received an honorary doctorate in canon law from the Catholic University of Leuven .

1824 Anton Joseph Binterim was by Pope Leo XII. awarded the Order of the Golden Spur , the second highest order for services to the Roman Catholic Church. In 1826 he became a member of the Catholic Academy in Rome.

In 1848 he was elected to the Prussian National Assembly.

A street in Bilk between Burghofstrasse and Suitbertusstrasse is named after him. Major parts of AJ Binterim's estate are in the Hermann Smeets archive of the Bilker Heimatfreunde in Düsseldorf.

Anton Joseph Binterim worked from 1805 until his death in 1855 as pastor of St. Martin in Bilk, Düsseldorf. He became known for his church-historical research work on the Archdiocese of Cologne and the Franciscan Order and is considered the "founding father" of the Historical Association for the Lower Rhine, which was founded in 1854 . With Heinrich Joseph Floß, Binterim supplemented the Concilia Germaniae by Hermann Joseph Hartzheim .

Binterim was a staunch opponent of the doctrine of the Hermesians . For his polemical remarks about church time issues such as interfaith marriage ( Cologne turmoil ), he came into conflict with the Prussian state authority and was in 1839 because of his public commitment against the detention of the Cologne archbishop Clemens August sentenced to a fortress punishment and in the Wesel citadel detained .
