Malakoff Kowalski (* 21st June 1979 in Boston as Aram Pirmoradi ) is a German - American - Persian musician and composer.

Life

Kowalski was born in the United States to Iranian parents. His mother is the concert pianist Annie Pirmoradi. The family moved to Hamburg in 1979 , where Kowalski grew up. In 2004 he founded the duo Jansen & Kowalski with Florian Pfeifle , which split up in 2006 after an album was produced (Universal Music / EMI Publ.). As a pseudonym, he initially only chose the surname Kowalski . He added the first name Malakoff in order not to be confused with Oliver Kowalski from the band Moonbootica .

Kowalski began producing his first solo album Neue Deutsche Reiselieder in Hamburg in 2006 (released on August 28, 2009), which he completed in Berlin. The first single Other People was released in June 2009 (Das Kowalski Komitee / EMI Publ.).

He mentions Led Zeppelin , David Bowie , Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms as his influences . The first single Other People was remixed by Deichkind , among others . The music video for Other People comes from the German film director Klaus Lemke and was nominated for the “Best Music Video 2010” at the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival. It was also named Video of the Month (November / December 2009) by the music magazine Spex . A three-week concert tour through Germany, Austria and Switzerland took place in 2010 with the German electro-pop duo 2raumwohnung .

Kowalski was a guest musician on the studio albums of the electronic band Moonbootica and has also been involved in the studio albums of 2raumwohnung as a composer and musician since 2008. Kowalski has been writing and producing film music for Klaus Lemke since 2008. The first collaboration with Lemke, Dancing With Devils , won the North German Film Prize in 2009 . The second joint film, Dirty South , was released in 2010. The following film, 3 Crosses for a bestseller , premiered in 2011 at the Hof Film Festival in Germany and at the Viennale film festival in Austria. The film Berlin for Heroes was released in the spring of 2012. It followed in 2013 no big thing , which was also shown as a premiere at the Viennale. The two films Unterwäschelügen (2016) and Making Judith (2017) were presented at the Munich Film Festival . In addition to Kowalski's original music, both films also feature works by German music producer DJ Hell . The repertoire of Kowalski's film music is very different from that of his studio albums and includes strings, simple and un-virtuoso piano pieces, Latin American folklore, blues quotes and electronic soundscapes.

For the Italian singer Vesto Caino, Kowalski shot the music video for (Ma Che) Dolce Vita (Sony Columbia / Warner Publ.) In 2011 , a homage to the classic film Das große Fressen by Marco Ferreri (1973). For theater director Angela Richter , Kowalski produced the music for her play Assassinate Assange , which is about Julian Assange , founder of the discovery portal Wikileaks . The play is authorized by the Australian who was last in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, with whom Richter was in telephone and personal contact for its production. The premieres were played in September 2012 at Kampnagel Hamburg and in October 2012 at the Brut Theater in Vienna.

In 2012 the solo album Kill Your Babies - Filmscore For An Unknown Picture (Buback Tonträger / EMI Publ.) Was released . The cover drawing for the album was made by the artist Daniel Richter , the liner notes (accompanying text) were written by the writer Maxim Biller , and Klaus Lemke was a guest composer. The instrumental album was Claudius Seidl in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung listed as "CD of the Year" and received the feature excellent reviews.

In April 2014, the theater play Brain and Beauty by Angela Richter was premiered at the Schauspiel Köln , in which Kowalski participated as a composer and performer. The piece deals with plastic surgery and is based on interviews with patients and doctors. a. Michael Jackson's dermatologist . In 2015, Kowalski worked for the first time with Stefan Bachmann , the artistic director of the Schauspiel Köln. Kowalski composed the music for his production of Parzival . The play based on the verse novel by Wolfram von Eschenbach was premiered on February 6, 2015 in Depot 1 at the Schauspiel Köln.

In the following months, Kowalski worked again with Angela Richter. Her play Supernerds revolves around the subject of whistleblowers and mass surveillance, primarily through the National Security Agency (NSA). In the run-up to the production, Richter met with whistleblowers such as Daniel Ellsberg , Edward Snowden and Julian Assange for interviews, from whose transcriptions the stage text emerged. Kowalski also partly derived the music from these transcriptions. The play was a TV co-production with WDR and was premiered on May 28, 2015 in Depot 1 at the Schauspiel Köln and on WDR television.

The third solo album entitled I Love You was released on September 18, 2015 on the MPS label . It comprises fifteen pieces; Maxim Biller and Klaus Lemke have been guest composers for three of the titles. The liner notes were written by the writer Helene Hegemann . The album, recorded in Los Angeles and Germany , received a. a. in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung , in the Süddeutsche Zeitung , on Zeit Online and in Vogue magazine very positive reviews - for example, Jan Kedves wrote in the Süddeutsche Zeitung : “Kowalski could take on the role that Chilly Gonzales with his 'solo piano' Albums has fulfilled for ten years: to deliver music for matters where it should be hip but also a little dignified. Elegant piano compositions. Charming, airy love songs. ” Andreas Rosenfelder wrote in the Welt am Sonntag about a private concert at the Berlin gallery owner Johann König :“ Sunk into the keys, he lets something warm, slow, enchanted rise from the instrument that sounds as if Erik Satie were sitting in the gloomy Los Angeles by ' Blade Runner ' and played dreamy etudes. "

In February 2016, Malakoff Kowalski published a plea for music streaming services in the music magazine Spex . B. Spotify , in which he strengthens the position of the music lover, instead of continuing the debate about the demise of the music industry and the exploitation of artists and producers.

In March 2017, the production of We want to be Plankton premiered at the Cologne Theater. Kowalski worked for the first time with Melanie Kretschmann as a director and the dramaturge Carl Hegemann . In April 2018, another solo album by Malakoff Kowalski entitled My First Piano was released on the MPS label . The video for the piano album comes from the artist Nina Pohl . It was filmed in the Berlin exhibition space of the Schinkel Pavilion and premiered by Monopol Magazin

It followed with the album My First Piano solo concerts a. a. in the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie , at the Stuttgart State Theater and at the Volksbühne Berlin .

In addition to the solo concerts, Malakoff Kowalski also appeared in the Berliner Ensemble and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg in 2018 with the writer Ferdinand von Schirach . In addition, Kowalski appeared as a guest at numerous concerts by the pianist Chilly Gonzales in 2019 .
